Crankshaft & Main Bearings

- Main bearing caps are numbered with No. 1 at timing belt end and No. 5 at flywheel end. Arrow on main bearing caps must point toward timing belt end of engine.
- Before installing main bearings, hold a straightedge across threads of main bearing cap bolts. Ensure threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, bolts are stretched and must be replaced.
- Lightly coat bolt threads with engine oil before installing. Tighten main bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure main bearing oil clearance and crankshaft end play are within specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS . Replace thrust bearing if end play is not within specification.
