Test TC-35A - EVAP Solenoid Circuit (DTC 31)

- Using scan tool, erase trouble codes and actuate Evaporative (EVAP) solenoid. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. If scan tool does not display EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT, condition required to set trouble code is not present at this time. Go to next step. If scan tool displays EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT, go to step 5).
- EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code sets if EVAP solenoid is not in its proper state when monitored by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are: open or shorted EVAP solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire), open EVAP solenoid fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire), open or shorted EVAP solenoid coil windings, or failed PCM. Go to next step.
- Inspect all related wiring and connectors. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If no problems are found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read trouble codes. EVAP solenoid actuation test should still be running. Wiggle wiring harness from EVAP solenoid to PCM. If EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code returns, repair wiring harness. Perform TEST VER-2. If EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code does not return, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION . Perform TEST VER-2.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 9, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 52, EVAP solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire). If resistance is 30-65 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is not 30-65 ohms, go to next step.
- If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 9, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 35, EGR solenoid control circuit (Gray/Yellow wire). If resistance is between 35-65 ohms, repair open Light Green/Black wire to EVAP solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is not 35-65 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect EVAP solenoid connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of EVAP solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire) between EVAP solenoid connector and PCM terminal No. 52. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace EVAP solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Pink/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
- Disconnect EVAP solenoid connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 52, EVAP solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Pink/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace EVAP solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2.
