Test TC-34A - EGR Solenoid Circuit (DTC 32)

  1. Using scan tool, erase trouble codes. Using scan tool, actuate EGR solenoid. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. If scan tool does not display EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT, condition required to set trouble code is not present at this time. Go to next step. If scan tool displays EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT, go to step 5).
  2. EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code sets if EGR solenoid is not in its proper state when monitored by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are: open or shorted EGR solenoid control circuit (Gray/Yellow wire), open EGR solenoid fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire), open or shorted EGR solenoid coil windings or failed PCM. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect all related wiring and connectors. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If no problems are found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. EGR actuation test should still be running. Wiggle wiring harness from EGR solenoid to PCM. If EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code returns, repair wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code does not return, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION  . Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 9, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 35, EGR solenoid control circuit (Gray/Yellow wire). If resistance is 30-65 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is not 30-65 ohms, go to next step.
  6. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 10 ohms, using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 9, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 52, EVAP solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire). If resistance is between 35-65 ohms, repair open Light Green/Black wire to EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is not 35-65 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Remove intake manifold to access EGR solenoid. Disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of EGR solenoid control circuit (Gray/Yellow wire) between EGR solenoid connector and PCM terminal No. 35. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Gray/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  8. Remove intake manifold to access EGR solenoid. Disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 35, EGR solenoid control circuit (Gray/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Gray/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2.
