Differential Case Installation

  1. Ensure drive pinion is installed in drive axle housing. Install assembled differential case, with Master Bearings (D-117) installed, in drive axle housing. Mount dial indicator on ring gear bolt side of differential case. See Figure.
NOTE: Use Master Differential Bearings (D-136) on 10 1/2" heavy duty drive axles. Outboard spacer, used before, must also be installed between master bearing and drive axle housing.
  2. Place dial indicator tip on chalk mark made during step 3) of DETERMINING TOTAL DIFFERENTIAL SHIM PACK  procedure. Force ring gear into mesh with drive pinion gear. Rock ring gear back and forth to allow teeth to mesh. While force is still applied to differential case, set dial indicator to zero.
  3. Force differential case away from drive pinion gear to obtain an indicator reading. Repeat this action until a constant reading is obtained. Record reading. Remove dial indicator and differential case from drive axle housing.
  4. Remove master bearings from differential case. Subtract reading found in step 3) of this procedure from total shim pack reading obtained under DETERMINING TOTAL DIFFERENTIAL SHIM PACK  procedure.

NOTE: The reading found in step 3) of this procedure will determine shim size to be used on ring gear side. The remaining portion of the shim pack will be used on the opposite side of ring gear. Add an additional .015" (.38 mm) to the side opposite the ring gear to preload bearings.
  5. Place proper amount of shims on differential bearing hub (ring gear side) and drive differential bearing onto hub using Differential Bearing Installer (J-23690) and Handle (J-8092).
  6. Place proper amount of shims on differential bearing hub (opposite ring gear side) and drive differential bearing onto hub using differential bearing installer and handle.
  7. Mount dial indicator on differential housing. See Figure. Preload dial indicator to .020" (.51 mm), then rotate gauge to zero dial. Use Drive Axle Housing Spreader (J-24385-01) to spread drive axle housing to .015" (.38 mm). DO NOT  spread housing more than specified, as housing will be damaged.
  8. Remove dial indicator. Install cups on differential case bearings. Install differential case in drive axle housing. If necessary, use a rawhide mallet to properly seat differential case in housing.
  9. On 10 1/2" heavy duty drive axles, use Preload Shim Installer (J-4205) and Handle (C-4171) to tap outboard spacer into place. On all drive axles, remove drive axle housing spreader. Install bearing caps tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
