Cylinder Head LH: Installation

  1. Inspect for any debri before installing the water jacket.

  2. Install the water jacket flush with the bottom of the block.

  3. Install the cylinder head gasket.

  4. NOTE: If the cylinder head is replaced, a new secondary timing chain tensioner will need to be installed.
    NOTE: Install new cylinder head bolts.

    Install the cylinder head and the new bolts.

    Torque: Stage 1: 20 Nm Stage 2: 35 Nm Stage 3: 90deg. Stage 4: 90deg. Stage 5: 45deg.

  5. Install the M6 bolt.

    Torque: 10 Nm

  6. NOTE: The valve tappets must be installed in their original positions.

    Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil and install.

  7. NOTE: Do not use power tools to install the bolt or damage to the upper LH timing chain guide may occur.

    Install the upper LH timing chain guide and the bolt.

    Torque: 10 Nm

  8. NOTE: Lubricate the O-ring seals with clean engine oil.

    Install the CMP sensors and the bolts.

    Torque: 10 Nm

    • Connect the LH CMP sensor electrical connectors and detach the wiring harness retainer.

    • Connect and attach the direct injection wiring harness electrical connector.

  9. NOTE: In stage 3, if the torque required to tighten any flare nut on the new high-pressure fuel tube reaches or exceeds 55 lb.ft (75 Nm), then that high pressure fuel tube must be discarded and replaced with another new high-pressure fuel tube.
    NOTE: Make sure that a new high-pressure fuel tube is installed.
    NOTE: Calculate the correct torque wrench setting for the following torque using the Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

    • Install the fuel rail to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube and finger tight the flare nuts.

    • Tighten the flare nuts in the following 3 stages.

      Torque: Stage 1: 7 Nm Stage 2: 10 Nm Stage 3: 30deg.

  10. Install the LH camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .
  11. Position the RH catalytic converter and install new flange nuts.

    Torque: 40 Nm

  12. Install the LH catalytic converter flange and new nuts.

    Torque: 40 Nm

  13. Attach the exhaust hanger and install the exhaust flange bolts.

    Torque: 40 Nm

  14. Connect the RH HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor.

  15. Connect the LH HO2S, catalyst monitor sensor and the wiring harness retainers.

    • Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    • Install the oil pan drain plug.

      Torque: 27 Nm

  16. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    • Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil and install and tighten in 2 stages.

    • Stage 1: Install to initial gasket contact.

    • Stage 2: Tighten 3/4 to 1 turn.

  17. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling

  18. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: SINGLE BATTERY . Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: DUAL BATTERIES
  19. Pressurize the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  20. Fill the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  21. Start and check the exhaust system for leaks.
  22. Road test the vehicle.
