Oil Pan: Installation

NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
  1. Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft engine front cover-to-cylinder block joint areas.

    Material: RTV silicone sealant (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  2. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.

    Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone on the chamfer, as shown.

    Material: RTV Silicone Sealant (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  3. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
    NOTE: The oil pan and the specified bolts must be installed and the oil pan aligned to the cylinder block within 4 minutes of sealant application. Final tightening of the oil pan bolts must be carried out within 60 minutes of sealant application.

    Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block joint areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan.

    Material: RTV Silicone Sealant (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  4. NOTE: The oil pan and the specified bolts must be installed within 4 minutes of the start of sealant application.
    NOTE: Keep the oil pan as close as possible to the transmission while installing, then slide forward towards the engine front cover to prevent wiping off of the sealant.

    Install the bolts finger tight.

  5. NOTE: Do not torque at this time.

    Draw the transmission and engine together using the bolts.

    Install the oil pan bolt and stud bolt.

  8. NOTE: If equipped with dual generator, it will be necessary to obtain a W503297 (10mm Hex) M8 x 1.25 x 35 bolt and washer to replace the dual generator bracket bolt during the oil pan tightening process.

    Install the engine front cover bolts finger tight.

  9. Install the remaining oil pan bolts and tighten in sequence.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1-9 and 11-14 to: 20 Nm Stage 2: Tighten bolts 1-9 and 11-14 an additional: 45deg. Stage 3: Tighten bolt 10 to: 20 Nm Stage 4: Tighten bolt 10 an additional: 90deg. Stage 5: Tighten bolts 15 and 16 to: 10 Nm Stage 6: Tighten bolts 15 and 16 an additional: 45deg.

  10. Tighten the engine front cover bolts.

    Torque: 24 Nm

  11. If equipped with dual generators, remove the engine front cover bolt.

  12. Tighten the bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 48 Nm

  14. Tighten the oil pan and bellhousing bolts.

  16. With the aid of an assistant, install the engine crossmember and the bolts.

    Torque: 63 Nm

    Install the RH and LH engine mount bolts to the bottom of the engine crossmember.

    Torque: 30 Nm

  18. Remove the stands.Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    • Position the oil cooler and install the bolt.

      Torque: 58 Nm

    • Attach the coolant hose retainer.

  19. Position the complete wiring harness assembly.

  20. Install the wiring harness bolt to the LH side of the engine crossmember.

    Torque: 8 Nm

  21. Install the wiring harness conduit bracket bolt and attach the wiring harness retainer.

    Torque: 11 Nm

    • Install the generator B+ terminal nut.

      Torque: 15 Nm

    • Position the protective cover.

    • Connect the generator electrical connector.

  22. Position the wiring harness and attach the retainer.

  23. Install the wiring harness conduit nut.

    Torque: 8 Nm

  24. Position the transmission wiring harness and install the bolt.

    Torque: 20 Nm

    • Position the transmission wiring harness and install the bolt.

    • If equipped with AWD, connect the transmission wiring harness electrical connector.

  25. If equipped with AWD, attach the transfer case vent tube retainers.

    1. If equipped with AWD, connect the transfer case wiring harness electrical connector and the wiring harness retainers.
    2. Position the catalyst monitor sensor wiring harness and retainer under the fuel tube.

  29. If equipped with dual generators, install the generator bracket and the bolts finger tight.

    • Tighten the bolts and stud bolt in sequence shown.

      Torque: Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1 and 2 to: 35 Nm Stage 2: Tighten bolt 3 to: 48 Nm Stage 3: Tighten stud bolt 4 to: 35 Nm

  30. If equipped with dual generators, install the secondary generator. Refer to: Generator - 3.5L Duratec (202kW/275PS) .
  31. If equipped with dual generators, install the A/C compressor. Refer to: INSTALLATION
  32. Install the lower load path bars and bolts.

    Torque: 1: 55 Nm 2: 25 Nm

  33. Attach the ground wire retainers.

    • Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil and install and tighten in 2 stages.

    • Stage 1: Install to initial gasket contact.

    • Stage 2: Tighten 3/4 to 1 turn.

  34. Install the following items:

    1. Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    2. If equipped with AWD (all-wheel drive), install the front axle assembly. Refer to: Axle Assembly .

  35. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Install the new RH and LH engine mount nuts.

    Torque: 115 Nm

  36. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: INSTALLATION
  37. Install the oil level indicator.
