Selector Lever Cable - 3.5L EcoBoost (235kW 320PS): Removal

  1. Prior to replacing the selector lever cable for a no start or a high shift effort concern, verify the selector lever cable-to-bracket clips are fully seated at the transmission and selector lever assembly. An unseated cable can cause selector lever cable binding and prevent the manual shaft from completely returning to the P position.

  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING
  3. Release the clips and remove the lower steering column opening trim panel.

  4. Press the stop tabs inward and fully lower the glove compartment.

  5. Release the clips and remove the trim panel.

  6. Position aside the selector lever bezel.

    1. Lift the back of the selector lever bezel and release the tabs.
    2. Lift the front of the selector lever bezel and release the tabs.

  7. Remove the trim panel.

  8. Remove the cup holder.

  9. Remove the screw, release the clips, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the instrument panel console.

  10. NOTE: Both sides.

    Remove the lower trim panel screw covers.

    Remove the screws and the lower trim panel.

  12. Remove the selector lever cable clip bolt.

  13. NOTE: Do not pull or pry on the selector lever cable or the selector lever cable end may be damaged. Use a screwdriver and turn the screwdriver as shown to pry the cable end off the post as close to the post as possible.

    Using a screwdriver, pry the selector lever cable end from the selector lever and disconnect the selector lever cable clip from the selector lever assembly.

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  14. Remove the front subframe. Refer to: REMOVAL
  15. Remove the nut, bolts and position aside the transmission fluid cooler.

    All vehicles 

  16. Remove the heat shield.

  17. Gently pry the latch up and slide the lock tab up.

  18. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever and the selector lever cable from the bracket.

  19. With the aid of an assistant, route the selector lever cable up to the passenger compartment and remove.
