Axle Shaft: Installation

Vehicles with Drum In Hat Parking Brake 

  1. NOTE: The O-ring seal is to be reused unless damaged.
    NOTE: Make sure the O-ring is installed correctly within the O-ring groove.

    • Inspect the O-ring for damage. Replace if necessary.

    • Lubricate the O-ring with clean RDU fluid. Refer to: Specifications .

  2. NOTE: Make sure that the component is installed to the position noted before removal.
    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Install the axle shaft and the new axle shaft bolts. Tighten all of the bolts in the sequence as shown.

    Torque:Stage 1: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)Stage 2: 46 lb.ft (62 Nm)Stage 3: 100deg.

    Vehicles with DRW and SRW Jumbo 

  3. NOTE: The O-ring seal is to be reused unless damaged.
    NOTE: Make sure the O-ring is installed correctly within the O-ring groove.

    • Inspect the O-ring for damage. Replace if necessary.

    • Lubricate the O-ring with clean RDU fluid. Refer to: Specifications .

  4. NOTE: Make sure that the component is installed to the position noted before removal.
    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Install the axle shaft and the new axle shaft bolts. Tighten all of the bolts in the sequence as shown.

    Torque:Stage 1: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)Stage 2: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)Stage 3: 90deg.

    Vehicles with single rear wheels 

  5. NOTE: The O-ring seal is to be reused unless damaged.
    NOTE: Make sure the O-ring is installed correctly within the O-ring groove.

    • Inspect the O-ring for damage. Replace if necessary.

    • Lubricate the O-ring with clean RDU fluid. Refer to: Specifications .

  6. NOTE: Make sure that the component is installed to the position noted before removal.

    Install the axle shaft and the new axle shaft bolts. Tighten all of the bolts in the sequence as shown.

    Torque:Stage 1: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)Stage 2: 50 lb.ft (68 Nm)Stage 3: 90deg.

    All vehicles 

  7. Check and top off the differential fluid. Refer to: Differential Fluid Level Check .
  8. Install the wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
