Pinpoint Test H: Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative Or Always On

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to: Instrument Panel and Interior Switches Illumination - System Operation and Component Description .

Possible Sources
- Wiring, terminals, or connectors
- Steering wheel switch(es)
- Clockspring
- Steering wheel
WARNING: Incorrect repair techniques or actions can cause an accidental Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deployment. Never compromise or depart from these instructions. Failure to precisely follow all instructions could result in serious personal injury from an accidental deployment.

H1 INSPECT THE NON-NETWORKED ILLUMINATION COMPONENTS

Ignition ON.

Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS or HEADLAMPS position.

While pressing the illumination dim up and dim down switch, monitor the non-networked illumination components.

Are all of the non-networked illumination sources inoperative or always on?

Yes	GO to Pinpoint Test C

No	If all steering wheel switch illumination is inoperative, GO to H2 If only one steering wheel switch is inoperative: GO to H8

H2 CHECK THE HORN OPERATION

Press the airbag module against the steering wheel.

Does the horn sound?

Yes	If all steering wheel switch illumination is inoperative, vehicles without adaptive steering, GO to H3 If all steering wheel switch illumination is inoperative, vehicles with adaptive steering, GO to H6

No	For vehicles without adaptive steering, REFER to: Horn . For vehicles with adaptive steering, REFER to: Horn - Vehicles With: Active Steering .

H3 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AT THE SCCM (STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE)

Ignition OFF.

Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

Depower the SRS. REFER to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering .

Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag .

Disconnect SCCM C226B.

Place a light source over the ambient light sensor so the illumination can reach maximum intensity.

Headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS or HEADLAMPS position.

Ignition ON.

Press the illumination dim up switch until full illumination intensity is reached.

Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes

GO to H4

No	REPAIR the circuit

H4 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS

Ignition OFF.

Connect SCCM C226B.

Disconnect Clockspring C218B.

Ignition ON.

Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes	INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel .

GO to H5

H5 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN

Ignition OFF.

Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

Disconnect Clockspring C218D.

Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

Yes	INSTALL a new SCCM. REFER to: Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) .

No	INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring .

H6 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE AT THE CLOCKSPRING

Ignition OFF.

Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

Depower the SRS. REFER to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering .

Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .

Disconnect Clockspring C218C.

Place a light source over the ambient light sensor so the illumination can reach maximum intensity.

Headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS or HEADLAMPS position.

Ignition ON.

Press the illumination dim up switch until full illumination intensity is reached.

Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes

GO to H7

No	REPAIR the circuit

H7 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING

Ignition OFF.

Ignition ON.

Connect Clockspring C218C.

Disconnect Clockspring C218G.

Ignition ON.

Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes	INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .

No	INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .

H8 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

Ignition OFF.

Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

Depower the SRS. REFER to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering .

Remove the driver airbag. For vehicles without adaptive steering, REFER to: Driver Airbag . For vehicles with adaptive steering, REFER to: Driver Airbag - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .

Disconnect Inoperative switch.

Place a light source over the ambient light sensor so the illumination can reach maximum intensity.

Headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

Ignition ON.

Press the illumination dim up switch until full illumination intensity is reached.

Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes	Install a new steering wheel switch. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch .
