Oil Pan: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Ford F-550 Super Duty and 2018 Ford F-450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Cooling fan shroud. Refer to: Cooling Fan Shroud .
    2. Generator. Refer to: Generator - 6.8L Triton-30V - V10 .
    3. Intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    4. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

  6. Remove the oil level indicator.

  7. Disconnect the heater hose.

    • Remove the bolt and the coolant tube.

    • Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  8. Remove the nut and position the transmission oil cooler tube bracket aside.

  9. NOTE: The transmission support insulator-to-crossmember nuts must be discarded and new nuts installed, or damage to the vehicle or transmission support insulator may occur.

    Remove and discard the transmission support insulator nuts.

  10. If equipped, remove the bolts and the skidplate.

  11. Remove the RH exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts and discard.

  12. Remove the LH exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts and discard.

  13. Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

  14. Remove the retainer and position the engine oil cooler aside.

    • Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    • Install the drain plug.

      Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

  15. NOTE: Failure to replace the engine mount nuts may result in engine mount damage.
    NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount nuts or damage to the engine mount may occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount nuts.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

  17. Install Special Service Tool: 303-639 Support Bracket, Engine.

    1. Install Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.
    2. Using the engine support bar, raise the engine.

    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Lower the oil pan.

    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.

  18. NOTE: Support the transmission on the pan rails only or internal transmission damage can occur.

    Install a transmission jack and raise the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  19. Remove the oil pan, the gasket and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.

    • Discard the oil pan gasket.

    • Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.

  20. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the aluminum retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper
