Cylinder Head RH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Ford F-550 Super Duty and 2018 Ford F-450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Cooling module. Refer to: Cooling Module .
    2. Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    3. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    4. Intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    5. Engine front cover. Refer to: Engine Front Cover .
    6. NOTE: If the cylinder head is being removed for servicing the cylinder head gasket only, it is not necessary to remove the spark plugs.

      Remove and discard the spark plugs. Refer to: Spark Plugs .

  5. Remove and discard the RH muffler inlet pipe to manifold nuts.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainer from the rear of the RH cylinder head.

    • Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside.

    • Remove the stud bolt from the rear of the RH cylinder head.

    • Position the coolant tube aside.

  9. Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

  10. NOTE: Only use hand tools to loosen the sprocket bolt or damage to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket may occur.

    Loosen the RH camshaft sprocket bolt one full turn.

  11. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.

  12. Install the original crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft keyway and the timing marks are positioned as shown.

    • Remove the original crankshaft pulley bolt.

  13. NOTE: If one or both of the tensioner mounting bolts are loosened or removed, the tensioner-sealing bead must be inspected for seal integrity. If cracks, tears, separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner or engine damage may occur.

    Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain tensioner and tensioner arm.

    • Inspect the timing chain tensioner sealing bead and replace if necessary.

  16. NOTE: The camshaft sprocket bolt will be used to position the camshaft during installation and then discarded.

    Remove the bolt and the RH camshaft sprocket.

  17. Install Special Service Tool: 303-572 (T97T-6000-A) Remover/Installer, Cylinder Head.

  18. NOTE: The cylinder head must be cool before removing it from the engine. Cylinder head warpage can result if a warm or hot cylinder head is removed.
    NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine or engine damage may occur.
    NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed or engine damage may occur. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused.
    NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths.

    1. Remove and discard the 11 bolts.
    2. NOTE: The lower rear cylinder head bolt cannot be removed until the cylinder head is removed from the vehicle.

      Loosen the lower rear cylinder head bolt completely and secure the bolt to the camshaft support tower using a tie strap.

    3. NOTE: Do NOT place the cylinder head on the bench with the cylinder head gasket surface down. The valves on the cylinder head assembly protrude below the gasket surface and may be damaged if they contact the bench.

      With the aid of an assistant, remove the cylinder head from the engine and place it on a bench with the cylinder head gasket surface facing up.

    • Remove and discard the tie strap and the lower rear cylinder head bolt.

  21. NOTE: The cylinder head assembly service part does not come with the front oil cover, the bolts or the gasket. It will be necessary to install a new gasket and the original front oil cover and bolts onto the new cylinder head assembly.

    1. If necessary, remove the bolts, the front oil cover and the gasket.
    2. Discard the gasket.

    NOTE: If the exhaust manifold needs to be removed, follow the next 3 steps.
  22. Remove the bolts and the heat shield.

    1. Remove the nuts and the exhaust manifold.
    2. Discard the nuts.
    3. Clean and inspect the exhaust manifold. Refer to: Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection .

  25. NOTE: If the cylinder head is being removed for servicing the cylinder head gasket only, it is not necessary to remove the CHT sensor.

    If necessary, remove and discard the CHT sensor.

  26. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
    NOTE: Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block using compressed air. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.

    1. Clean and inspect the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surfaces of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block
    2. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
    3. Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
