Cylinder Head RH: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Ford F-550 Super Duty and 2018 Ford F-450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If removed, install a new CHT sensor.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  2. NOTE: The cylinder head assembly service part does not come with the front oil cover, the bolts or the gasket. It will be necessary to install a new gasket and the original front oil cover and bolts onto the new cylinder head assembly.

    If necessary, install a new gasket, the front oil cover and the bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Install the camshaft sprocket pulley bolt and washer.
    2. Rotate the camshaft clockwise to position the camshaft keyway as shown.
    3. Remove the camshaft sprocket pulley bolt and washer.
    4. Discard the camshaft sprocket pulley bolt.

    NOTE: If the exhaust manifold was removed, follow the next 3 steps.
  3. Install new exhaust manifold studs and gaskets.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  4. Install the exhaust manifold and new washers and nuts. Tighten in the sequence shown.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  5. Install the heat shield and the bolts.

    Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

  6. Install Special Service Tool: 303-572 (T97T-6000-A) Remover/Installer, Cylinder Head.

  7. Install a new cylinder head gasket.

  8. NOTE: Do not tighten the cylinder head bolts at this time.

    1. Using a tie strap, secure a new lower rear cylinder head bolt to the camshaft support tower.
    2. With the aid of an assistant, install the cylinder head.
    3. Remove the tie strap from the lower rear bolt and install the remaining new cylinder head bolts.

  9. NOTE: Be sure to tighten the bolts in 3 stages.

    Tighten the bolts in sequence shown in 3 stages.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    Stage 2: 90 °

    Stage 3: 90 °

  10. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-572 (T97T-6000-A) Remover/Installer, Cylinder Head.

  11. NOTE: Finger tighten at this time.

    Install the RH camshaft sprocket, washer and a new bolt finger-tight.

  12. NOTE: Prior to installation, inspect the tensioner-sealing bead for seal integrity. If cracks, tears, separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner or engine damage may occur.

    Using a vise, compress the tensioner plunger and install the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clip (PN# 1L3Z-6P250-AA) on the tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation. Use the General Equipment: Vise

  13. NOTE: There are 61 links in each timing chain.

    If copper (colored) links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

  14. Install the RH timing chain guide and the bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  15. NOTE: Be sure the chain link and crankshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned.
    NOTE: The lower half of the timing chain must be positioned above the dowel.

    Install the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket.

  16. Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. Make sure the 2 copper-colored (marked) links align with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.

  17. Position the RH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the RH timing chain tensioner and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  18. Remove the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clip from the RH timing chain tensioner.

  19. Install the crankshaft sensor ring onto the crankshaft.

  20. NOTE: Only use hand tools to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket.

    Tighten the RH camshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    Stage 2: 90 °

  21. Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

    • Position the coolant tube.

    • Install the stud bolt.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • Attach the wiring harness retainer to the rear of the RH cylinder head.

    • Position the ground strap and install the bolt.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  22. Position the RH muffler inlet pipe and install new nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  23. Position the LH muffler inlet pipe and install new nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  24. Install the following items:

    1. NOTE: If the cylinder head is being removed for servicing the cylinder head gasket only, it is not necessary to remove the spark plugs.

      Install new spark plugs. Refer to: Spark Plugs .

    2. Engine front cover. Refer to: Engine Front Cover .
    3. Intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    4. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    5. Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .

    • Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    • Install the oil pan drain plug.

      Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

  25. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

  26. Install a new engine oil filter.

    Torque: 142 lb.in (16 Nm)

  27. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

  28. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  29. Install the cooling module. Refer to: Cooling Module .
  30. Use the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Misfire Monitor Profile Correction routine in the diagnostic scan tool.
