- Record the main bearing code found on the front of the engine block.
- Record the main bearing code found on the rear of the crankshaft.
- Using the data recorded earlier and the Bearing Select Fit Chart, Standard Bearings, determine the required bearing grade for each main bearing.
- Read the first letter of the engine block main bearing code and the first letter of the crankshaft main bearing code.
- Read down the column below the engine block main bearing code letter, and across the row next to the crankshaft main bearing code letter, until the 2 intersect. This is the required bearing grade for the No. 1 crankshaft main bearing.
- As an example, if the engine block code letter is "F" and the crankshaft code letter is "D", the correct bearing grade for this main bearing is a "2".
- Repeat this process for the remaining 4 main bearings.
- If oversize bearings are being used, use the procedure in the previous step and the Bearing Select Fit Chart, Oversize Bearings to determine the required bearing grade for each main bearing.

NOTE: Before assembling the cylinder block, all sealing surfaces must be free of chips, dirt, paint and foreign material. Also, make sure the coolant and oil passages are clear.NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the upper crankshaft bearings prior to installing the crankshaft.
Install the new upper crankshaft main bearings into the cylinder block.

NOTE: Lubricate the crankshaft bearing journals with clean engine oil.
Install the crankshaft into the cylinder block.
-
NOTE: If equipped, assemble the grooved side of the upper crankshaft main bearing thrust washer toward the crankshaft thrust surface.NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the thrust faces of the crankshaft prior to installing the upper crankshaft main bearing thrust washers.
Push the crankshaft rearward and install the upper crankshaft main bearing thrust washer to the rear of the number 6 bulkhead.

NOTE: If equipped, assemble the grooved side of the thrust washer toward the crankshaft thrust surface.NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the thrust faces of the crankshaft prior to installing the upper crankshaft main bearing thrust washer.
Push the crankshaft forward and install the upper crankshaft thrust washer to the front of the number 6 bulkhead.

NOTE: If equipped, the oil groove on the thrust washer must face toward the crankshaft thrust surface.NOTE: To aid in assembly, apply petroleum jelly to the back of the crankshaft thrust washer.NOTE: Only one lower bearing shown.
Install the new lower crankshaft main bearings into the crankshaft main bearing caps. Position the lower crankshaft main bearing thrust washer on the number 6 crankshaft main bearing cap.

NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the lower crankshaft main bearing thrust washer and to the rear face of number 6 crankshaft main bearing cap.NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the lower crankshaft main bearings.NOTE: Lightly lubricate the crankshaft main bearing cap bolt threads and flanges with clean engine oil.
- Install the 6 crankshaft main bearing caps into the cylinder block.
- Loosely install the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts.
- Install the dowel pins so that the flat sides face the crankshaft.

NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.NOTE: Lightly lubricate the crankshaft main bearing cap side bolt threads and flanges with clean engine oil.
Loosely install the crankshaft main bearing cap side bolts.
- Tighten the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts.
Torque:
Stage 1: 1 through 12: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)
Stage 2: 1 through 12: 90 °
Stage 3: 13 through 24: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
Stage 4: 13 through 24: 90 °
- Check the piston-to-cylinder block and piston ring clearances. Refer to: Specifications .
- Assemble the pistons and position the piston ring gaps. Refer to: Piston .
- Make sure the dimple in the piston faces the front of the engine.

NOTE: Do not scratch the cylinder walls or crankshaft journals with the connecting rod, or engine damage may occur.NOTE: Lubricate the pistons, piston rings, connecting rod bearings and the entire cylinder bores with clean engine oil.
Using a piston ring compressor, install the piston and connecting rod assembly. Use the General Equipment: Piston Ring Compressor

NOTE: The rod cap installation must keep the same orientation as marked during disassembly or engine damage may occur.NOTE: The connecting rod caps are of the "cracked" design and must mate with the connecting rod ends. Excessive bearing clearance will result if not mated correctly.
- Position the connecting rod caps.
- Loosely install the new bolts.
- Repeat the previous 2 steps for each of the remaining pistons.
- Tighten the connecting rod bolts in sequence shown in 2 stages.
Torque:
Stage 1: 32 lb.ft (43 Nm)
Stage 2: 105 °
- Rotate the crankshaft and repeat the procedure to position each connecting rod at bottom dead center until all bolts are tightened to specification.
- Prime the oil pump. Add 2 tablespoons of clean engine oil to the oil pump and rotate the oil pump by hand.
- Install the oil pump and the bolts.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
- Install the oil pump screen and pickup tube spacer.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

NOTE: Make sure the O-ring is in place and not damaged. A missing or damaged O-ring can cause foam in the lubrication system, low oil pressure and severe engine damage.NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Lubricate with clean engine oil and install the new O-ring seal, install the oil pump screen and pickup tube and the bolts.
Torque:
1: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
2: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Rotate the crankshaft to position the keyway at 12 o'clock.

Install the dowels on the cylinder block.

NOTE: Make sure all coolant residue and foreign material are cleaned from the block surface and cylinder bore, or engine damage may occur.NOTE: The use of sealing aids (aviation cement, copper spray and glue) is not permitted. The gasket must be installed dry or engine damage may occur.NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts installed or engine damage may occur. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused.NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft until instructed to do so.NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Using the special tools, install the cylinder head gaskets and cylinder heads over the dowels. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1040 Alignment Pins, Cylinder Head.

NOTE: Be sure to tighten the bolts in 3 stages.NOTE: The arrow indicates the front of the engine.
Tighten the bolts in sequence shown in 3 stages.
Torque:
Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

- Remove the special tool from the LH cylinder head. Use Special Service Tool: 303-572 (T97T-6000-A) Remover/Installer, Cylinder Head.
- Remove the special tool from the RH cylinder head. Use Special Service Tool: 303-572 (T97T-6000-A) Remover/Installer, Cylinder Head.

NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.NOTE: Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Install the hydraulic lash adjusters into the LH cylinder head.

NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Install only the identified camshaft roller followers onto the LH cylinder head.

NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft and camshaft journals with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Install the LH camshaft.

NOTE: Make sure that the components are installed to the position noted before removal.
- Lubricate the LH camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.
- Position the front camshaft bearing cap.
- Position the remaining camshaft bearing caps.
- Install the bolts loosely.
- Tighten the LH camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence shown in 2 stages.
Torque:
Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)
Stage 2: 45 °

Install the hydraulic lash adjusters into the RH cylinder head.

Install only the identified camshaft roller followers onto the RH cylinder head.

Install the RH camshaft.

- Install the balance shaft drive gear onto the LH camshaft.

Install the LH camshaft sprocket and a new bolt finger-tight.

Install the RH camshaft sprocket and a new bolt finger-tight.

NOTE: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.NOTE: Prior to installation, inspect the tensioner-sealing bead for seal integrity. If cracks, tears, separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner or engine damage may occur.
Using a vise, compress the tensioner plunger and install the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clip on the tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation. Use the General Equipment: Vise

NOTE: There are 61 links in each timing chain.
If copper links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

- Install the RH timing chain guide and the bolts.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
- Install the LH timing chain guide and the bolts.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
- Install the RH timing chain guide and the bolts.
- Preposition the camshafts in the following sequence.
- Rotate the LH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o'clock.
- Rotate the RH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o'clock.

NOTE: Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past the position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur.
Using the special tool, position the crankshaft, then remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-448 (T93P-6303-A) Holding Tool, Crankshaft.
- Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the flange faces forward.
- Install the lower end of the LH timing chain, aligning the timing marks.
-
NOTE: Be sure the upper half of the timing chain is below the tensioner guide dowel.
Install the LH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket with the 2 chain (marked) links and the timing marks aligned.
-
NOTE: The LH timing chain tensioner arm has a bump near the dowel hole for identification.
Position the LH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the LH timing chain tensioner and the bolts.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
-
NOTE: Be sure the chain link and crankshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned.NOTE: The lower half of the timing chain must be positioned above the dowel.
Install the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket.
- Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. Make sure the 2 copper-colored (marked) links align with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.
- Position the RH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the RH timing chain tensioner and the bolts.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Remove the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clips from the RH and LH timing chain tensioners.
- Check for correct alignment of all timing marks.
- Install the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.

NOTE: Only use hand tools to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket may occur.
Tighten the RH camshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages:

- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and position the crankshaft keyway at the 6 o'clock position.
- Remove the bolts and the middle balance shaft bearing support and camshaft bearing cap assembly.

NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or damage to the engine may occur.NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller follower with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Using the special tool, install the roller follower. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.

- Install the balance shaft bearing support and camshaft bearing cap assembly.
- Tighten the bolts in 2 stages.
Torque:
Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)
Stage 2: 45 °

NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or damage to the engine may occur.NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Install all of the remaining camshaft roller followers. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise and position the crankshaft keyway at the 11 o'clock position.
-
NOTE: Lubricate the balance shaft journals with clean engine oil.
Install the balance shaft with the timing marks on the balance shaft gear (1) and the camshaft gear (2) aligned.
-
NOTE: The balance shaft bearing caps must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.
- Install the balance shaft bearing caps and install the bolts finger-tight.
- Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.NOTE: If the engine front cover is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.NOTE: Make sure that the engine front cover gasket is in place on the engine front cover before installation.
Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant along the cylinder head-to-cylinder block surface at the locations shown.
Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket and Sealant / TA-30 (WSE-M4G323-A4)
- Install a new engine front cover gasket on the engine front cover.
- Position the engine front cover onto the dowels.
-
- Install the engine front cover bolts and stud bolts finger-tight.
- Tighten the engine front cover bolts and stud bolts in sequence shown.
Torque:
1-5: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
6-7: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)
8-15: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Install a new coolant pump O-ring seal and lubricate with clean engine coolant.
Material: Motorcraft ® Orange Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant / VC-3DIL-B (WSS-M97B44-D2)

NOTE: Do not rotate the coolant pump housing once the coolant pump has been positioned in the cylinder block. Damage to the O-ring seal will occur.
Install the coolant pump and bolts.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Lubricate the engine front cover and the crankshaft seal inner lip with clean engine oil.
- Using a special tool, install a new crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-635 Installer, Crankshaft Front Oil Seal., 303-335 (T88T-6701-A) Installer, Front Cover Oil Seal., 303-102 Installer, Crankshaft Pulley.

NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the Woodruff key slot on the crankshaft pulley.
Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket and Sealant / TA-30 (WSE-M4G323-A4)
- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft pulley with washer. Use Special Service Tool: 205-381 (T97T-1177-A) Installer, Rear Axle Oil Seal.

NOTE: Use a universal pulley holder (such as an OTC 4754, or equivalent).
Using a universal pulley holder, install and tighten a new crankshaft pulley bolt in 4 stages.
Torque:
Stage 1: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)
Stage 2: Loosen: 360 °
Stage 3: 37 lb.ft (50 Nm)
Stage 4: 90 °
- Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the bolts.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Install the RH accessory drive belt idler pulley and the bolt.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Install the coolant pump pulley and the bolts.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

- Install the cylinder block drain plug.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)
- Install the cylinder block drain plug.

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces, and install a new gasket.
Install a new gasket, the oil filter adapter, the bolts and the nut.
Torque:
Bolts: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
Nut: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)
- Install new exhaust manifold gaskets and the cylinder head studs.
Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
- Install the LH exhaust manifold and the new washers and nuts. Tighten in sequence shown.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Install the heat shield and the bolts.
Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

NOTE: Some replacement exhaust manifolds do not come with studs.
If necessary, install new studs.
Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)
- Install new exhaust manifold gaskets and cylinder head studs.
Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
- Install the RH exhaust manifold and the new washers and nuts. Tighten in sequence shown.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
- Install the heat shield and the bolts.
Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in 2 places where the engine front cover meets the cylinder head.

- Install a new gasket to the RH valve cover.
- Install the RH valve cover on the cylinder head and tighten the fasteners in sequence shown.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

NOTE: If the valve cover is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in 2 places where the engine front cover meets the cylinder head.
Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket and Sealant / TA-30 (WSE-M4G323-A4)
- Install a new gasket to the LH valve cover.
- Install the LH valve cover on the cylinder head and tighten the fasteners in sequence shown.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

NOTE: Lubricate the new oil level indicator tube O-ring seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
- Install a new O-ring seal, the oil level indicator tube and bolt.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
- Install the oil level indicator.
- Install a new O-ring seal, the oil level indicator tube and bolt.
- Install both KS and the bolts.
Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)
- Install the wiring harness and connect the KS electrical connectors.
- Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

NOTE: Verify that the ignition coil spring is correctly located inside the ignition coil boot and that there is no damage to the tip of the boot.NOTE: Apply a light coat of dielectric compound to the inside of the ignition coil boots prior to installation.
Install the ignition coil-on-plugs and the bolts.
Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)
- Install the LH engine mount bracket and new bolts.
Torque:
Stage 1: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
Stage 2: 60 °
- Install the RH engine mount bracket and new bolts.
Torque:
Stage 1: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
Stage 2: 60 °
- Install the special tool and remove the engine from the engine stand using a floor crane. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane Use the General Equipment: Mounting Stand

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the aluminum retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
Apply a 4 mm (0.16 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant around the crankshaft rear seal retainer sealing surface.

- Install the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate and the bolts finger-tight.
- Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.
Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may cause future oil leakage.
Apply 8 mm (0.314 in) silicone gasket and sealant at the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block and engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surface.

- Install the oil pan gasket.
- Position the oil pan and the bolts finger-tight.
- Tighten the bolts in sequence shown in 3 stages.

Stage 1: 18 lb.in (2 Nm)
Stage 2: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

NOTE: Lubricate the crankshaft rear seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installers, install a new crankshaft rear seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-516 (T95P-6701-BH) Installer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal., 303-518 (T95P-6701-DH) Installer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal.

NOTE: Lubricate the crankshaft oil slinger with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installers and the Crankshaft Rear Oil Slinger Installer, install a new crankshaft oil slinger. Use Special Service Tool: 303-516 (T95P-6701-BH) Installer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal., 303-517 (T95P-6701-CH) Installer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Slinger., 303-518 (T95P-6701-DH) Installer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal.
- Install the engine rear cover plate.
- Install the flexplate and tighten the bolts in sequence shown.
Torque: 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)
- Install the engine. Refer to: Engine .
