    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TCM requires an operating voltage between 9 and 21 volts. The TCM is supplied voltage through 2 fused circuits from the BJB. 1 power circuit is hot at all times, and the other circuit is hot with the ignition in Start or Run. The TCM has a single ground circuit. Excessive resistance or an open in one or more of these circuits, a discharged battery or a inoperative charging system will result in the TCM setting a DTC.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
TCM P068A:00 ECM/PCM Power Relay De-Energized - Too Early: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates power was removed from the TCM before it properly shut down.
TCM P0702:00 Transmission Control System Electrical: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM detected a supply voltage either above or below threshold.
TCM P0882:00 TCM Power Input Signal Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM detected a supply voltage of less than 9 volts.
TCM P0883:00 TCM Power Input Signal High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM detected a supply voltage of greater than 21 volts.
TCM P0884:00 TCM Power Input Signal Intermittent: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM was unable to store fault data due to an unexpected loss of power.
TCM P1397:00 System Voltage Out Of Self Test Range: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM detected a voltage supply outside the allowed self-test range of 11 to 18 volts during a KOEO or a KOER self-test.

    Possible Sources

    • Charging system concern
    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
    • Circuit open or shorted
    • BJB fuse
    • TCM

  2. L1 CHECK FOR CHARGING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) IN THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all continuous memory diagnostic trouble codes (CMDTCs) from the PCM.

Are any charging system diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present in the PCM?

Yes  DIAGNOSE the charging system concern. REFER to: Charging System - 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel .
    No  GO to  L2
  3. L2 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION AND STATE OF CHARGE

    • Carry out the Battery Condition Test. REFER to: Battery .

Did the battery pass the condition test?

    Yes  GO to  L3
No  INSTALL a new battery. REFER to: Battery .
  4. L3 CHECK THE CHARGING VOLTAGE

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

    • Turn off all interior lights, exterior lights and accessories.

    • NOTE: Do not allow the engine speed to increase above 2, 000 RPM while carrying out this step or the generator may self-excite and result in default charging system output voltage. If engine speed goes above 2, 000 RPM, turn the engine off and restart the engine before carrying out this step.

Start and run the engine at approximately 1, 500 RPM for 3 minutes while monitoring the battery voltage.

Does the battery voltage stay between 13 and 15.2 volts?

    Yes  GO to  L4
No  DIAGNOSE the charging system concern. REFER to: Charging System - 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel .
  5. L4 RECHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Did DTC P068A, P0702, P0882, P0883, P0884 and/or P1397 return?

    Yes  GO to  L5
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have set due to a previous low battery voltage condition.
  6. L5 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) VBATT CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TCM C1822.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1822-48
      GFD558539Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the voltage within 1 volt of the recorded battery voltage?

    Yes  GO to  L6
No  VERIFY BJB fuse F65 (15A) is OK. If the fuse is OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the open circuit. If the fuse is not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the short circuit.
  7. L6 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) VPWR CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1822-31
      GFD558539Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the voltage within 1 volt of the recorded battery voltage?

    Yes  GO to  L7
No  VERIFY BJB fuse F24 (10A) is OK. If the fuse is OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the open circuit. If the fuse is not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the short to ground.
  8. L7 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
