Engine - Body On

NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body can be removed, refer to Engine - Body Off in this information.

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Hood. Refer to: Hood .
    2. NOTE: It is not necessary to clamp off the degas bottle hose with the cooling system drained.

      Degas bottle. Refer to: Degas Bottle .

    3. Cooling module. Refer to: Cooling Module .
    4. NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage.

      Intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .

    5. Front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .

  6. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

    • Disconnect the A/C line from compressor.

    • Discard the O-ring seal.

    • Make sure that all openings are sealed.

    • Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube.

    • Discard the O-ring seal.

    • Make sure that all openings are sealed.

  12. Remove the starter. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  13. Disconnect the coolant hose quick release couplings.

    1. Detach the coolant tube retainer.
    2. Remove the nut and position the coolant tube and bracket aside.

    1. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    3. Remove the pin-type retainer.

  16. Remove the nut and position the wiring harness aside.

    1. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    1. Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.

  19. Remove the bolts and the LH heat shield.

  20. Remove and discard the engine oil filter and drain the engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
  21. If equipped, remove the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .
    • Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  23. Remove and discard the catalytic converter-to-LH exhaust manifold nuts.

  24. Remove and discard the catalytic converter-to-RH exhaust manifold nuts.

    • Separate the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter from the exhaust manifolds.

  25. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.

  26. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction.

    Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

  27. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the studs.

  33. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.

    Vehicles equipped with single generator 

    1. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    3. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    4. Disconnect the quick release coupling.
    5. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    6. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    7. Release the spring clip and remove the coolant bypass T assembly from the engine.
    8. Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose assembly. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    Vehicles equipped with dual generators 

    1. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the coolant hose.
    3. Disconnect the quick release coupling and position the coolant hose aside.
    4. Detach the coolant hose retainer.
    5. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    6. Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  36. Rotate the belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the secondary generator drive belt.

    1. Reposition the wiring protective cover.
    2. Remove the nut and the B+ wire.
    3. Depress the tab and disconnect the generator electrical connector.
    4. Remove the bolt and position the wiring harness aside.
    5. Remove the fasteners and the generator.

    All vehicles 

    1. Disconnect the heater hose.
    2. Detach the coolant hose retainers.
    3. Disconnect the coolant pump electrical connector.
    4. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    5. Remove the fasteners and position the coolant pump and bracket aside.

    • Disconnect the center PCM electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.

    • Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector and position the engine wiring harness on the engine.

  42. Remove the nut and ground strap from the RH valve cover stud bolt.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  50. Detach the retainer and position the vent hose aside.

  53. NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the height floor jack to support the transmission.

    Using the Heavy Duty Floor Crane, raise the engine assembly to gain access to the LH engine mount bolts. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

  54. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount-to-frame bolts.

    • Remove and discard the bolts.

    • Remove the flexplate.

  59. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring and the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.

  60. Inspect the crankshaft sensor ring for damage. If the crankshaft sensor ring has been dropped or has any visual damage, it must be replaced.
