All vehicles
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the fasteners and the underbody shield.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the skid plate.
- Remove the starter. Refer to: Starter Motor .
- Disconnect the coolant hose quick release couplings.
-
- Detach the coolant tube retainer.
- Remove the nut and position the coolant tube and bracket aside.
-
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer.
- Remove the pin-type retainer.
- Remove the nut and position the wiring harness aside.
-
- Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
-
- Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.
- Remove the bolts and the LH heat shield.
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter and drain the engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
- If equipped, remove the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

- Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
- Remove and discard the catalytic converter-to-LH exhaust manifold nuts.
- Remove and discard the catalytic converter-to-RH exhaust manifold nuts.
- Separate the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter from the exhaust manifolds.
- Remove the cylinder block opening cover.

NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction.
Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.
Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.
Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.
- Remove the studs.
- Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.
- Remove the RH bellhousing bolt.
- Remove the LH bellhousing bolt.
- Remove the body. Refer to: Body .

- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 2. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 2. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Slide the EVAP canister purge valve off of the intake manifold.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 1. Disconnect the fuel supply tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 2. Disconnect the fuel jumper tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Remove the fuel rail insulators.
- Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector.
- Disconnect the LH fuel injector harness and fuel pressure sensor electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the RH fuel injector harness electrical connector.

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the fuel rail from the intake manifold assembly.
Remove the fuel rail bolts.
- Loosen the intake manifold bolts.

- Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the intake manifold.

NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage.NOTE: Visually inspect the manifold gaskets for nicks, cuts and abrasions. If these conditions are NOT present, the gaskets may be re-used.
Remove and inspect the gaskets.
- Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.

- Remove the insulators.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.
Vehicles equipped with single generator

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the quick release coupling.
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the spring clip and remove the coolant bypass T assembly from the engine.
- Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose assembly. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
Vehicles equipped with dual generators

- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the coolant hose.
- Disconnect the quick release coupling and position the coolant hose aside.
- Detach the coolant hose retainer.
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Rotate the belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the secondary generator drive belt.

- Reposition the wiring protective cover.
- Remove the nut and the B+ wire.
- Depress the tab and disconnect the generator electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt and position the wiring harness aside.
- Remove the fasteners and the generator.
- Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.
- Remove and discard the thermostat housing gaskets.
All vehicles

- Disconnect the heater hose.
- Detach the coolant hose retainers.
- Disconnect the coolant pump electrical connector.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer.
- Remove the fasteners and position the coolant pump and bracket aside.
- Remove the nut and ground strap from the RH valve cover stud bolt.
- Detach the transmission wiring harness retainer.

NOTE: Single generator engine shown, dual generator engine similar.
Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
- Remove bolts and position the generator to access the electrical connections.

- Reposition the wiring protective cover.
- Remove the nut and the B+ wire.
- Depress the tab and disconnect the generator electrical connector.
- Remove the generator.

NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.
Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.
Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- Detach the retainer and position the vent hose aside.
- Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-F047 Lifting Bracket, Engine.

NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the height floor jack to support the transmission.
Using the Heavy Duty Floor Crane, raise the engine assembly to gain access to the LH engine mount bolts. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.
Remove and discard the LH engine mount-to-frame bolts.
- Remove the LH engine mount.
- Remove the bellhousing bolts.
- With the aid of an assistant, use the Heavy Duty Floor Crane to remove the engine assembly from the chassis. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

NOTE: The flexplate bolts are torque-to-yield design and are not reusable.
- Remove and discard the bolts.
- Remove the flexplate.
- Remove the crankshaft sensor ring and the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.
- Inspect the crankshaft sensor ring for damage. If the crankshaft sensor ring has been dropped or has any visual damage, it must be replaced.
