Oil Pan: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

4x2/4x4 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    2. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

  5. Remove the oil level indicator.

  6. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

    Remove the fasteners and the underbody shield.

  10. Disconnect the coolant hose quick release couplings.

    1. Detach the coolant tube retainer.
    2. Remove the nut and position the coolant tube and bracket aside.

    1. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    3. Remove the pin-type retainer.

  13. Remove the nut and position the wiring harness aside.

    1. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    1. Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.

  16. Remove the bolts and the LH heat shield.

  17. Remove the engine cooler. Refer to: Oil Cooler .

  18. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

  19. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .
    1. WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.

    2. Separate the steering column shaft U-joint from the steering gear.

  21. Remove the steering gear boot.

  22. Using an adjustable stand, support the front axle. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  23. Remove and discard the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.

  24. Remove and discard the axle shaft housing carrier bushing nut and the bolt.

  25. NOTE: After loosening the bolt, it may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when removing the bolt.

    Remove and discard the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt.

  26. Using an adjustable stand, lower the axle to allow clearance for the oil pan to be removed. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    4x2/4x4 

    • Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  28. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts and studs.

  29. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  30. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

    • Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts.

    • Allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

    1. Position an adjustable stand and wood block under transmission bellhousing. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle StandsUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block
    2. Raise the adjustable stand 63.5 mm (2.5 in).

  33. Install a 38 mm (1.5 in) X 38 mm (1.5 in) X 76 mm (3 in) wood block between the RH engine mount and the frame perch.

    1. Using the adjustable stand, lower the engine onto the wood block installed in the previous step. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands
    2. Remove the stand and wood block under the transmission bellhousing.

  35. Remove the nuts, bolts and the crossmember.

  36. Drain the engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
  37. Remove the bolts, stud bolts and the oil pan.

  39. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  40. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
