Removal And Installation: Transmission: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Depower the high voltage battery. Refer to: High Voltage System De-energizing .
  3. Remove the starter motor assembly. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  4. Remove the rear driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  5. Remove the front driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  6. Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts and allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

    All vehicles 

  7. Remove the transmission fluid heat exchanger. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Heat Exchanger .
  8. Disconnect the engine clutch pressure sensor and detach the wiring harness from the transmission.

  9. Remove the retainers and heat shield.

  10. Remove the retainers from the NVH cover.

  11. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
    NOTE: Note the location of the bolts and studbolts for assembly.

    Remove the bolts, studbolts and the transmission fluid pan.

  12. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

  13. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission JackUse the General Equipment: Retaining Strap

  14. Remove the LH catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .
  15. Remove the transmission support insulator. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .
  16. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor sensor and the RHHO2S electrical connectors.

  17. Remove the bolts from the catalytic converter flange to the muffler inlet pipe.

  18. NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.

    Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts and remove the catalytic converter.

  19. Remove and discard the gasket.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  20. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt.

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  21. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt and disconnect the transfer case vent tube.

    1. Disconnect the transfer case electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the transfer case electrical harness retainer.

    All vehicles 

  23. NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect the electrical connector or damage to the electrical connector will occur.

    1. Slide the lock tab up and disconnect the transmission electrical connector.
    2. Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.
    3. Detach the retainers from the transmission and position the wiring harness aside.

  24. NOTE: If equipped with a self-adhesive heat shield, covering the transmission bolts, position aside the shield to access the bolts.

    Remove the LH bellhousing bolts and the heat shield.

  25. Remove the bolts and position aside the high voltage wiring harness.

  31. Disconnect the hybrid drive unit low voltage connector.

    1. Slide the safety lock out.
    2. Press the connector tab in.
    3. Rotate the locking arm up and disconnect the low voltage connector.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  32. Using the high-lift transmission jack, remove the transmission from the vehicle. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

    1. Make sure the transmission is securely fastened to the transmission jack.
    2. Slide the transmission towards the rear of the vehicle.
    3. Tilt the front of the transmission down.
    4. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

  34. If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove and discard the bolts and separate the transfer case from the transmission.

    All vehicles 

  35. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
