WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

Vehicles with a 10R transmission should not be towed in neutral with the engine off and the drive tires on the ground. When the engine is off, there is no transmission fluid flow in the transmission, and therefore no lubrication. This will lead to internal transmission damage if the vehicle is towed in neutral with the engine off. In case of emergency, the vehicle may be towed in this manner, only up to 55 kph (35 mph) for a distance up to 80 km (50 miles).

4WD vehicles have a neutral tow mode that puts the transfer case in neutral and leaves the transmission in park. This will not damage the transmission since the internal transmission components are locked stationary by the park pawl.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
PCM P179D:00 Neutral Mode Exceeded Speed/Distance Conditions: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the vehicle was towed in neutral with the engine off and drive tires on the ground for greater than 10 km (6 miles). If the vehicle is towed in this manner over 55 kmh (35 mph), or for greater than 80 km (50 miles), transmission damage may occur. If the customer uses the Ford Pass system, the app will notify the customer when this DTC sets.

    Possible Sources

    • Towing the vehicle in neutral with the engine off

  2. AG1 INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID FOR SIGNS OF WEAR

Does the transmission fluid condition indicate excessive wear?

Yes  Overhaul the transmission. REFER to: Transmission . Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
    No  GO to  AG2
  3. AG2 CHECK FOR SIGNS OF INTERNAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the DTC from the PCM.

    • Road test the vehicle. Pay close attention for any noise, transmission engagement, or shifting concerns.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the PCM self-test.

Are any gear engagement or clutch fault diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present, or are any noise, engagement, or shifting concerns present?

Yes  Overhaul the transmission. REFER to: Transmission . Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
No  Internal transmission damage is not evident at this time.
