Pinpoint Test Ab: P1636

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The PCM contains Phoenix drivers, which are chips that control the low sides of the solenoid circuits to provide the commanded current. The main processor in the PCM communicates with the Phoenix drivers over a serial interface. The main processor sends the desired solenoid state, and the Phoenix drivers return circuit fault status information.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P1636:00 Inductive Signature Chip Communication Error: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an internal PCM loss of communication with the low side solenoid drivers. When communication is lost, the solenoid states become unknown, so the PCM opens the high side of the circuit, releasing all clutches. Only neutral is available with the TCC released and maximum line pressure.

    Possible Sources 

    • PCM fault

  2. AB1 RECHECK THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) P1636

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the DTC from the PCM.

    • Repeat the following steps 2 times.

      • Start the engine.

      • Select Drive.

      • Wait 5 seconds.

      • Select Reverse.

      • Wait 5 seconds.

      • Select Park.

      • Ignition OFF.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.

    Is DTC P1636 present in the PCM? 

    Yes  Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    Internet Explorer version 11 or greater is required to perform this Pinpoint Test. 
    After programming the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
    No  GO to  AB2

  3. AB2 ROAD TEST THE VEHICLE AND RECHECK THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) P1636

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Road test the vehicle a second time.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.

    Is DTC P1636 present in the PCM? 

    Yes  Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    Internet Explorer version 11 or greater is required to perform this Pinpoint Test. 
    After programming the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
    No  The fault is not present at this time.
