Pinpoint Test AE: P1706
- NOTE: The park pawl can be damaged by ratcheting too many times. Once the root cause of P1706 has been identified and repaired, the park pawl must be inspected to make sure it is free of damage and still capable of holding the vehicle.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
Park is normally only commanded when the vehicle is stopped or nearly stopped. If park is engaged while the vehicle is moving, the park pawl will ratchet on the teeth of planetary carrier assembly No. 4. The PCM monitors the park system position using the TR sensor. If the TR sensor shows the transmission is in park while the vehicle is moving above a certain speed, a DTC will set.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P1706:00 High Vehicle Speed Observed in Park: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TR sensor reported the vehicle was in park while the vehicle was moving above a speed where park would be commanded. This would cause the park pawl to ratchet, which could damage the park pawl. Possible Sources
- Clutch stuck off fault
- Hydraulic control fault
- Unintended PCM reset
- PCM fault
- AE1 CHECK THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.
Are any power supply, internal module, TR sensor, clutch fault, or gear engagement fault diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?
Yes RESOLVE those diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. REFER to the DTC Chart. No GO to AE2 - AE2 CHECK THE GSM (GEAR SHIFT MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the GSM self-test.
Are any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present in the GSM?
Yes RESOLVE those diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). REFER to: External Controls - Vehicles With: Column Shift . REFER to: External Controls - Vehicles With: Console Shift . No GO to AE3 - AE3 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PARK SYSTEM
- Access the PCM and monitor the TR_PARK_STATPID
- Start the engine.
- Repeat the following steps 3 times while observing PID TR_PARK_STAT. Pause in each gear position.
- Select Drive.
- Select Park.
- Select Reverse.
- Select Park.
Does PID TR_PARK_STAT show In Park when park is selected and Out of Park when drive or reverse is selected?
Yes GO to AE4 No To diagnose a stuck in park concern, see condition Engagement Quality > Park. REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom . - AE4 ROAD TEST THE VEHICLE
- Road test the vehicle. Pay attention for any gear engagement or shifting symptoms that could indicate a clutch fault or a park system fault.
Are any observable symptoms present?
Yes RESOLVE any observable symptoms. REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom . No GO to AE5 - AE5 INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION PARK SYSTEM COMPONENTS
- Remove the main control valve body. REFER to: Main Control Valve Body .
- Remove the transmission fluid auxiliary pump. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Pump .
- Inspect the park pawl and the park lock teeth on planetary carrier No. 4. Make sure the park lock teeth are not worn or damaged.
- Inspect the park pawl, park pawl actuator rod, TR sensor, and park return spring. Make sure all components are properly installed and free of damage.
- Remove and inspect the park lock pawl solenoid. Make sure the pin is not stuck. REFER to: Park Lock Pawl Solenoid .
- Remove and inspect the park lock pawl valve. If the valve or bore is damaged, INSTALL a new main control valve body. REFER to: Main Control Valve Body .
Are any transmission park components worn, damaged, or improperly installed?
Yes INSTALL new components as necessary. No GO to AE6 - AE6 RECHECK THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the PCM.
- Access the PCM and monitor the TR_PARK_STATPID
- Road test the vehicle. Monitor PID TR_PARK_STAT to make sure park does not engage while moving.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the PCM.
Is DTC P1706 present?
Yes Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
Internet Explorer version 11 or greater is required to perform this Pinpoint Test.
After programming the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .No The fault is not present at this time.
