The shift by wire system uses a mechanically shifted GSM to interface with the PCM or TCM to select gear positions.
The GSM will automatically shift into P when the drivers door is open.
The GSM includes switches allowing the driver to manually shift the transmission when M is selected on the GSM.
The transmission can not be shifted out of P unless the brake pedal is applied with the engine running.
A transmission park manual release cable allows the transmission to be shifted out of P manually.
