Pinpoint Test D: B15DA:09

  1. Refer to CHARGING SYSTEM for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The BCM monitors auxiliary battery(ies) through a battery current sensor which uses a PWM circuit which is wired to the BCM.

    For Non-hybrid vehicles with auxiliary batteries and a 110 - 120 volt 2kw to 2.4kw pickup bed power outlet there are two 12 volt batteries in series creating a 24 volt source.

    For Hybrid vehicles there is a single 12 volt auxiliary battery.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    BCM B15DA:09 Vehicle Battery "C": Component Failures Sets in the BCM when the senses a failed auxiliary battery due to one of the following conditions.
    Disconnected auxiliary battery(ies)
    Open auxiliary battery(ies) fuse (attached to the auxiliary battery(ies) post)
    Open auxiliary battery(ies) fuse (in the high current BJB) (hybrid vehicles only)
    Failure of the auxiliary battery(ies)
    The BCM does not detect current from the battery current sensor.

    Possible Sources 

    • Auxiliary battery(ies)
    • Auxiliary battery(ies) fuses
    • Battery current sensor
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify the auxiliary battery(ies) fuses
    • Inspect the battery current sensor
    • Inspect the battery current sensor connector

  2. D1 INSPECT THE AUXILIARY BATTERY(IES) CONNECTIONS

    NOTE: Vehicles equipped with two auxiliary batteries, the batteries are two 12 volt batteries connected in series creating a 24 volt battery supply.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Inspect the auxiliary battery(ies) connections.

    Are all battery cable connections securely fasten to the auxiliary battery(ies)? 

    Yes  GO to  D2
    No  Secure the loose battery cable(s) connections to the battery(ies).
  3. D2 CHECK THE AUXILIARY BATTERY(IES) FUSE

    • Verify that the auxiliary battery(ies) fuses are ok.

      • auxiliary battery(ies) fuse located on the auxiliary battery(ies) positive post.

      • auxiliary battery(ies) fuse located in the high current BJB (hybrid vehicles only).

    Are the auxiliary battery(ies) fuses ok? 

    Yes  GO to  D3
    No  Verify that the battery cable is not shorted, If OK, Install a new auxiliary battery(ies) fuse(s). If shorted, REPAIR or REPLACE the auxiliary battery(ies) cable as needed.
  4. D3 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR

    • Inspect the battery current sensor for the following:

      • physical damage
      • corrosion
      • disconnected electrical connector
      • battery ground cable routed through the battery current sensor
      • debris between the battery current sensor and the battery ground cable

    Are any of these conditions found during inspection? 

    Yes  REPAIR as necessary or INSTALL a new battery current sensor. REFER to: Battery Current Sensor .
    No  GO to  D4
  5. D4 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Battery current sensor C3888.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  D8
    No  If the voltage is less than 4.8 volts, GO to  D6 If the voltage is greater than 5.2 volts, GO to  D5
  6. D5 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BCM C2280F.

    • Using the Terminal Release Kit, release and temporarily remove BCM C2280F-3.

    • Connect BCM C2280F.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  INSTALL C2280F-3 and GO to  D16
  7. D6 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BCM C2280F.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. D7 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D15
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. D8 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  D11
    No  GO to  D9
  10. D9 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  D10
  11. D10 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BCM C2280F.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D15
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. D11 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BCM C2280F.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  D12
  13. D12 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BCM C2280F.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D13
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  14. D13 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D14
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  15. D14 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE SIGNAL RETURN OR REFERENCE CIRCUIT

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D15
    No  REPAIR the affected circuit.
  16. D15 CHECK THE BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR CONNECTION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Battery Current Sensor C3888, if necessary.

    • Inspect the battery current sensor connector for:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Connect Battery Current Sensor C3888.

    • Connect BCM C2280F.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in all modules.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Did the DTC return? 

    Yes  REPAIR as necessary or INSTALL a new battery current sensor. REFER to: Battery Current Sensor . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). REPEAT the self-test. If the DTC returns, GO to  D16
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  17. D16 VERIFY THE BATTERIES CONDITION

    NOTE: Vehicles equipped with two auxiliary batteries, the batteries are two 12 volt batteries connected in series creating a 24 volt battery supply. They need to be disconnected and separated prior to testing the battery(ies).

    • Verify that the auxiliary battery(ies) condition. For the auxiliary battery(ies), GO to Pinpoint Test B 

    Does the auxiliary battery(ies) pass the condition test? 

    Yes  RETURN the battery to service. GO to  D17
    No  If the auxiliary battery does not pass the battery condition test, INSTALL a new battery(ies) for the one in question. REFER to: Auxiliary Battery .
  18. D17 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Connect all  connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  Check OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
