Pinpoint Test AK : U0140, U0422

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TCM and the BCM communicate over HS-CAN1.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
TCM U0140:00 Lost Communication With Body Control Module: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM did not receive messages from the BCM over the HS-CAN for longer than 5 seconds.
TCM U0422:00 Invalid Data Received From Body Control Module: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM is receiving messages from the BCM, but the BCM is reporting failures in key signals.

    Possible Sources

    • Communication concern
    • Battery voltage concern
    • BCM
    • TCM

  2. AK1 VERIFY THE SCAN TOOL COMMUNICATES WITH THE BODY CONTROL MODULE

    • Ignition ON.

    • Connect a diagnostic scan tool.

    • Check that a vehicle session can be established using a diagnostic scan tool.

Can a vehicle session be established?

    Yes  GO to  AK2
No  For a BCM does not communicate with the scan tool concern, REFER to: Communications Network .
  3. AK2 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

Are any non-network TCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?

Yes  RESOLVE all non-network diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    No  GO to  AK3
  4. AK3 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

Are any non-network BCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  RESOLVE all non-network diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  GO to  AK4
  5. AK4 RECHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DTC U0140, U0422

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all TCM diagnostic trouble codes.

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Is DTC U0140 and/or U0422 present?

    Yes  GO to  AK5
No  The concern is not present at this time. It might have been caused by high network traffic or by an intermittent fault.
  6. AK5 CHECK FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) U0140 SET IN OTHER MODULES

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the continuous memory self-test.

    • Retrieve the CMDTCs from all modules.

Are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) U0140 and/or U0422 set in other modules on the network?

    Yes  GO to  AK6
    No  GO to  AK7
  7. AK6 CHECK FOR CORRECT BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, program the BCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, Refer to BCM GUIDED ROUTINE .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  8. AK7 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect TCM C1822 and all related inline connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect TCM C1822 and all related inline connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, program the TCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
