Pinpoint Test AJ : U0121, U0415

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TCM and the ABS module communicate over HS-CAN1. Key information the ABS module sends to the TCM include vehicle speed and brake pedal position.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
TCM U0121:00 Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A": No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM did not receive messages from the ABS module over the HS-CAN for longer than 5 seconds.
TCM U0415:00 Invalid Data Received from Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A": No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TCM is receiving messages from the ABS module, but the ABS module is reporting failures in key signals.

    Possible Sources

    • Communication concern
    • Battery voltage concern
    • ABS
    • TCM

  2. AJ1 VERIFY THE SCAN TOOL COMMUNICATES WITH THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS module self-test.

Did the ABS module complete the self-test?

    Yes  GO to  AJ2
No  To diagnose the ABS module does not communicate with the scan tool, REFER to: Communications Network .
  3. AJ2 RECHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DTC U0121, U0415

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Is DTC U0121 and/or U0415 present?

    Yes  GO to  AJ3
No  The concern is not present at this time. It might have been caused by high network traffic or by an intermittent fault.
  4. AJ3 CHECK THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS module self-test.

Are any non-network ABS module diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?

Yes  RESOLVE all non-network diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. REFER to: Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Stability Control .
    No  GO to  AJ4
  5. AJ4 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the TCM self-test.

Are any non-network TCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?

Yes  RESOLVE all non-network diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    No  GO to  AJ5
  6. AJ5 CHECK FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) U0121, U0415 SET IN OTHER MODULES

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the continuous memory self-test.

    • Retrieve the CMDTCs from all modules.

Is DTC U0121 and/or U0415 set in other modules on the network?

    Yes  GO to  AJ6
    No  GO to  AJ7
  7. AJ6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the ABS module connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the ABS module connector. Make sure it seat and latches correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, program the ABS module with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, Refer to ABS GUIDED ROUTINE
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  8. AJ7 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect TCM C1822 and all related inline connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect TCM C1822 and all related inline connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, program the TCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
