Engine - Body Off

Floor Crane
Oil Drain Equipment
Trolley Jack
Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
Wooden Block
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. Refer to BODY . If the body cannot be removed, refer to Engine - Body On .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. If equipped, remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

  6. NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

  8. Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

  10. Remove the pin-type retainer and position the wiring harness from the oil pan.

  12. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  13. Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

  14. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

  15. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

  18. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  19. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, studs or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: The engine mount stud may come off with the nuts.

    • Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the RH engine mount studs.

  23. Remove the A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
  24. Remove the body. Refer to: Body .
  25. Remove the nut and position the transmission cooler tube bracket and wiring harness aside.

  26. Disconnect the generator wiring from the engine front cover.

  28. Disconnect the coolant hose from the cabin heater coolant pump. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  29. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing and hoses.

  30. Inspect and replace if necessary.

    • Disconnect the cabin heater coolant pump wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Remove the bolts and position the cabin heater coolant pump and coolant hose aside.

  32. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the EGR valve.

  33. Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect coupling from the intake manifold. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

    • Position the B+ wire protective cover, remove the nut and position the B+ wire aside.

    1. Remove the generator stud nut.
    2. Remove the generator stud.
    3. Remove the bolt and the generator.

    1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve tube quick connect coupling from the intake manifold. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Detach the EVAP canister purge valve tube retainer from the intake manifold.
    3. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve wiring harness electrical connector.
    4. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve tube quick connect coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    5. Detach the EVAP canister purge valve from the retainer and remove.

    • Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    1. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector and wire harness retainer.
    2. Remove the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt.

    • Remove the bolt, hoses and the EGR transducer.

    1. Remove the EGR tube to intake manifold bolts.
    2. Remove the bolts and the EGR tube.

    • Remove and discard the upper intake manifold gaskets.

    • Clean and inspect all of the sealing surfaces of the upper and lower intake manifold.

  47. NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.

    • Disconnect the quick release coupling and position the fuel supply tube aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Disconnect the quick release couplings and remove the high-pressure fuel pump to port injection fuel rail tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

  49. NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley Jack. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  50. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    • Install the floor crane. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

    • Install a ratchet strap from the front of engine to the chain to keep the engine level.

    • Using the floor crane and chain, raise the engine for clearance to remove the LH engine mount. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
