Cylinder Head LH: Removal

NOTE: The cylinder heads must be cool before removing it from the engine. Cylinder head warpage can result if a warm or hot cylinder head is removed.
NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine.
  1. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Cooling Fan .
    2. Refer to: Cooling Fan Stator .
    3. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
    4. Refer to: Exhaust Manifold LH .
    5. Remove the LH rocker arms. Refer to: Rocker Arm .
    6. Refer to: Coolant Crossover Manifold .
    7. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Outlet Pipe .

  4. Remove the bolt from the battery wire harness.

  5. Remove the bolts and position aside the power steering pump.

    • Position back the boot and remove the nut.

    • Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

  7. Disconnect the battery wire harness retainer from the bracket.

  8. If equipped with dual generators, remove the idler pulley.

  9. Remove the bolts and the power steering pump mounting bracket.

  10. Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside. Disconnect the wire retainer.

  11. NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
    NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface.
    NOTE: The M12 cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts installed. They are torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused.

    • Remove and discard the M12 cylinder head bolts. Remove the M8 cylinder head bolts.

    • Remove the LH cylinder head.

  12. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket and cylinder head dowels.

  13. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper

    Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A

    Material: Motorcraft ® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

  14. Check the cylinder head distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
  15. Check the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
