Fuel Tank: Removal

WARNING: : Before working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: When handling fuel, always observe fuel handling precautions and be prepared in the event of fuel spillage. Spilled fuel may be ignited by hot vehicle components or other ignition sources. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: If the fuel pump is operational, connect the fuel tanker hose to the engine supply hose. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle and command the fuel pump to run. It the fuel pump is operational, connect the fuel tanker hose to the engine supply hose. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle and command the fuel pump to run.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation steps.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING
  2. Disconnect the battery. Refer to Battery Disconnect and Connect
  3. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  4. Drain the fuel tank. Only if fuel tank being replaced. Refer to: Fuel Tank Draining .
  5. Remove the skid plate nut.

    Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

  6. Disconnect the fuel supply and return tube quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the hose. Position the hose aside.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  8. Using a powertrain lift, support the fuel tank. Use Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1585AE Powertrain Lift.
    • Remove the bolts.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    • Position aside the fuel tank straps and remove the fuel tank.

  9. If the fuel tank is being replaced, remove the fuel pump and sender unit and drain the fuel tank using the fuel tanker. Refer to: Fuel Pump and Sender Unit . Use Special Service Tool: 292-00004 Fuel Tanker 100 GPM.
