Transmission - 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.

  4. Remove the upper transmission fluid filler tube bolt.

  5. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the bolts and the transmission fluid pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

  6. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

  7. Remove and discard the oil filter.

  8. Disconnect the oil temperature sensor and oil pressure switch electrical connectors.

  9. Remove the wiring harness bracket nut and position the wiring harness aside.

  10. NOTE: Note the location of the stud bolt.

    Remove the stud bolt, the bolts and the oil filter adapter.

  11. Remove and discard the gasket (6840).

  12. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  13. Remove the retainers and the access cover.

  14. NOTE: Index-mark the end of one torque converter stud and the flexplate for installation.
    NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolts, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts (W715618).

    1. Rotate the shell of the transmission vehicle harness connector counterclockwise and disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the transmission case.

    1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
    2. Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.

  16. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

    Remove and discard the RH engine support insulator nuts.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  18. NOTE: When removing the crossmember, support the transmission using a heavy duty transmission jack.

    • Place the jack so the fluid pan does not support the weight of the transmission. 

    • Fasten a chain or ratchet strap over the top of the transmission and to both sides of the jack. 

    Failure to use a heavy duty transmission jack can result in damage to the transmission.  Remove the transmission support crossmember. Refer to: TRANSMISSION SUPPORT CROSSMEMBER

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a slip yoke 

  19. Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .
  20. NOTE: If installing a new, remanufactured or overhauled transmission.

    1. Remove and discard the transmission support insulator-to-transmission bolts.
    2. Remove the transmission support insulator.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a fixed yoke 

  21. NOTE: It may be necessary to tap the driveshaft yoke with a plastic or rubber soft-faced hammer if a pry area is not present on the driveshaft side.

    1. Index mark the rear driveshaft.
    2. Remove and discard the driveshaft to output shaft flange bolts and straps (4A254).

  22. Remove and discard the center bearing mounting bolts from the center bearing bracket. Position aside and Support the driveshaft using mechanics wire.

  23. NOTE: If installing a new, remanufactured or overhauled transmission.

    1. Remove and discard the transmission support insulator bracket bolts.
    2. Remove the transmission support insulator and bracket.

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  24. NOTE: When removing the crossmember, support the transmission using a heavy duty transmission jack.

    • Place the jack so the fluid pan does not support the weight of the transmission. 

    • Fasten a chain or ratchet strap over the top of the transmission and to both sides of the jack. 

    Failure to use a heavy duty transmission jack can result in damage to the transmission. 

    NOTE: If the transmission is being removed for the flexplate or engine related repairs, the transfer case does not need to be separated from the transmission.

    Remove the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    All vehicles 

  25. Remove the bolt and position the transmission fluid cooler tubes aside.

  26. Inspect the transmission to be sure the transmission fluid tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid tubes and are not stuck in the transmission. If the transmission fluid tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission, remove the seals and backing rings.

  27. Remove the lower transmission fluid filler tube bolt and position the transmission fluid filler tube aside.

  29. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap or chain.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, support the transmission.

    1. Outer ribs of the transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
    2. Safety chain.

  31. Remove the upper bellhousing bolts and the fuel tube bracket. Remove the transmission from the engine dowel pins.

  32. NOTE: Be sure to position the Torque Converter Retainer in the proper position to ensure the torque converter is held securely in place.

    Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool and remove the transmission. Install Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  33. NOTE: Failure to flush the transmission fluid cooler and transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in metallic contamination of the transmission.

    If installing a new, remanufactured or overhauled transmission, clean and backflush the transmission fluid cooler tubes to prevent repeat repairs. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .

  34. NOTE: Failure to install a new auxiliary transmission fluid cooler can result in metallic contamination of the transmission.

    If installing a new, remanufactured or overhauled transmission install a new auxiliary transmission fluid cooler if equipped.

  35. NOTE: Failure to clean the PTO can result in metallic contamination of the transmission.

    For vehicles equipped with a PTO assembly, prior to installing the transmission, flush and clean the PTO assembly to remove any foreign material. Failure to remove foreign material from the PTO assembly may result in subsequent transmission concerns.
