Transmission - 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel: Installation

All vehicles 

  1. Inspect the back of the engine to be sure both dowel pins are in the engine. If the dowel pins are not in the engine, install new dowel pins as needed. If installing the same transmission that was removed, remove the dowel pins from the transmission and install them in the engine.

  2. NOTE: Prior to installation of the transmission, lubricate the torque converter pilot hub or damage to the torque converter or the engine crankshaft can occur.

    Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with multi-purpose grease.

  3. Align the paint dot on the torque converter in the 12 o'clock position.

  4. NOTE: Be sure to position the Torque Converter Retainer in the proper position to ensure the torque converter is held securely in place.

    Install the special tool. Install Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  5. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, position the transmission into the vehicle behind the engine and remove the special tool. Remove Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  6. Position the fuel line bracket over the torque converter housing and install the transmission on the dowel pins on the back of the engine. Install the upper bellhousing bolts.

    Torque:

    35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  7. Install the lower engine-bellhousing bolts.

    Torque:

    35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  8. Install the new torque converter nuts (W715618).

    Torque:

    41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  9. Install the access cover and the retainers.

  10. Install a new transmission fluid filler tube O-ring (391308). Lubricate it with clean transmission fluid.

    Material

    Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (WSS-M2C938-A) (MERCON® LV,)

  11. Install the transmission fluid filler tube in the transmission and install the lower transmission fluid filler tube bolt.

    Torque:

    18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  12. Inspect the transmission fluid tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Seal (7D285)

      Material

      Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (WSS-M2C938-A) (MERCON® LV,)

    2. Backing ring (7J324)

  13. Position the transmission fluid cooler tubes in the transmission case and install the bolt.

    Torque:

    18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  14. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a slip yoke 

  15. If removed. Install the transmission support insulator and new transmission support insulator-to-transmission bolts.

    Torque:

    76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  16. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a fixed yoke 

  17. If removed. Install the transmission support insulator and bracket and the new bolts.

    Torque:

    41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    1. Position the driveshaft on the flange, align the driveshaft flange yoke index mark made during removal.
    2. Install the new center bearing mounting bolts.

      Torque:

      52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  18. Install the new bearing straps (4A254) and the new bolts.

    Torque:

    46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  19. Install the transmission support crossmember. Refer to: Transmission Support Crossmember .

    All vehicles 

  20. NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

    Install the new LH engine support insulator nuts.

    Torque:

    148 lb.ft (200 Nm)

  21. NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

    Install the new RH engine support insulator nuts.

    Torque:

    148 lb.ft (200 Nm)

  22. Install the fuel line bracket bolt.

    Torque:

    85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

    1. Position the selector lever cable bracket and install the bolts.

      Torque:

      35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    2. Connect the selector lever cable to the manual control lever.

    1. Attach the wiring harness retainer to the transmission case.
    2. Connect the transmission vehicle harness connector and lock the transmission vehicle harness connector by rotating the outer shell clockwise.

  23. NOTE: Do not connect the battery at this time.

    Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .

  24. Install the new gasket (6840).

  25. NOTE: Install the stud bolt in the location noted during removal.

    Install the oil filter adapter and the bolts and a stud bolt.

    Torque:

    106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  26. Position the wiring harness and install the wiring harness bracket nut.

    Torque:

    97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  27. Connect the oil temperature sensor and oil pressure switch electrical connectors.

  28. Install the new oil filter.

  29. Connect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  30. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6R140 .
  31. Install the upper transmission fluid filler tube bolt.

    Torque:

    97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  32. Install the transmission fluid level indicator.

  33. NOTE: If transmission was drained, fill the transmission with clean transmission fluid.
    NOTE: If transmission was not drained, install the transmission fluid level indicator then check and adjust the transmission fluid level.

    Fill the transmission with clean transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .

  34. Check and adjust the engine oil level.
  35. If a new main control was installed, the solenoid body strategy will need to be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
