Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TSS sensor is a Hall-effect type sensor that provides a signal to the PCM that changes in frequency as the rotating speed of the forward (1, 2, 3, 4) clutch cylinder varies. The PCM compares the TSS sensor signal with the engine speed information to determine the amount of slip occurring in the torque converter. The PCM also compares the TSS sensor signal with the OSS sensor signal to determine the gear ratio provided by the rear planetary gearset. The PCM uses the TSS sensor signal as an input for its strategies for shifts and TCC operation. The PCM also uses the TSS sensor signal for transmission fault detection and diagnostics. DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P0715:00 Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor "A" Circuit: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open circuit or a short to ground in the TSS sensor circuit. PCM P0717:00 Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor "A" Circuit No Signal: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TSS sensor reads 0 speed when vehicle conditions (mainly the OSS sensor) indicate the turbine shaft should be rotating. This could be caused by an open circuit, a short to ground or a short to power in the TSS sensor circuit, or by a failed sensor. PCM P0718:00 Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an unrealistic change or an intermittent/noisy signal from the TSS sensor. This could be caused by an intermittent open circuit, short to ground or short to power in the TSS sensor circuit, or by a failed sensor. Possible Sources
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires or ground and missing or damaged seals
- TSS sensor
- PCM
- D1 DRIVE CYCLE TESTNOTE: Read and record all DTCs.NOTE: If DTCs P0705, P0706, P0707, P0708, P0709, P1702, P1705 and/or P1921 are set, diagnose those DTCs first.
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode: PID TSS_SRC.
- Monitor the PID TSS_SRC while road testing the vehicle. Drive the vehicle so the transmission upshifts and downshifts through all the gears.
Does the TSS sensor rpm steadily increase and decrease with engine rpm and vehicle speed?
Yes The TSS sensor is operating correctly at this time. No GO to D2 - D2 CHECK FOR OSS DTCS
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode: PCM Self-Test.
Are OSS sensor diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0720, P0721, or P0722 present?
Yes GO to D3 No GO to D8 - D3 CHECK THE TSS/OSS POWER CIRCUIT FOR POWER
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Transmission Vehicle Harness C1575
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1575-12 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D6 No GO to D4 - D4 CHECK THE TSS/OSS POWER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM C175E.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1575-12 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to D5 No INSPECT and REPAIR transmission vehicle harness TSS/ OSS power circuit for a short to ground. - D5 CHECK THE TSS/OSS POWER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING After installing the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . No REPAIR the circuit. - D6 CHECK THE TSS/OSS SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Ignition ON.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D8 No GO to D7 - D7 CHECK THE TSS/OSS SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM C175E.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING After installing the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . No REPAIR the transmission vehicle harness sensor ground circuit for an open. - D8 CHECK THE TSS SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM C175E.
- Disconnect: Transmission Vehicle Harness C1575 (If not already disconnected).
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to D9 No INSPECT and REPAIR transmission vehicle harness TSS sensor signal circuit for an open or high resistance. - D9 CHECK THE TSS SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
