Cylinder Head: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  2. Connect the battery ground. Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    2. Remove the cowl panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel .
    3. Remove the camshafts. Refer to: Camshaft .

  4. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector and wire retainer.

  5. Remove the bolts and the catalytic converter heat shield.

  6. Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts.

  7. Remove and discard the catalytic converter studs.

  8. Detach the coolant connector from the cylinder head.

  9. Detach the EGR valve from the cylinder head.

    1. Remove the EGR valve retaining bolts.
    2. Remove the ground cable retaining bolt.

    • Remove and discard the EGR gasket.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    • Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.

    • Remove the fuel rail insulator.

  10. NOTE: If the valve tappets are to be reused, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.

    Remove the valve tappets.

  11. Remove and discard the bolts.

  12. NOTE: When removing or installing the cylinder head, use care to prevent excessive movement of the turbocharger. Excessive movement may cause damage to the turbocharger oil return tube resulting in an engine oil leak.

    1. Lift the cylinder head to clear the locating dowels in the cylinder block.
    2. Slide the cylinder head and studs out of the turbocharger and remove.

  13. Remove and discard the catalytic converter studs and gasket.

  15. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

    • Clean the cylinder head sealing surfaces.

  16. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

    • Inspect the cylinder head sealing surfaces.

  17. NOTE: Replace the gasket if damaged.

    Inspect the coolant outlet connector gasket and replace as necessary.

  18. Clean and inspect the catalytic converter manifold. Refer to: Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection .
