Pinpoint Test E: The Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

See Odometer. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

If the odometer count message is missing for 2 seconds or less, the IPC defaults the odometer to the last display, based upon the last known good odometer rolling count message.

If the IPC does not receive the odometer count message for longer than 2 seconds, the IPC defaults the odometer display to all dashes (-----).

If the odometer count message is deemed invalid by the IPC, the IPC defaults the odometer display to all dashes (-----). If the NVM becomes corrupted or if any NVM failure occurs, the message ERROR displays in the odometer display area.

    Possible Sources

    • Communication concern
    • GWM
    • PCM
    • IPC

  2. NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC, other observable symptoms can be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
  3. E1 CHECK FOR CORRUPTED NON-VOLATILE (NVM)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Observe the message center display area.

    Does the odometer display ERROR?

Yes  INSTALL a new IPC. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)  .
    No  GO to  E2
  4. E2 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC  .
    No  GO to  E3
  5. E3 PERFORM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) KOEO (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM KOEO self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    No  GO to  E4
  6. E4 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to: Communications Network .
    No  GO to  E5
  7. E5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the PCM connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the PCM connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
