Engine Front Cover: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - GT500 - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Degas Bottle .
    2. Air cleaner outlet pipe.
    3. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    4. RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
    5. LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
    6. Coolant pump. Refer to: Coolant Pump .
    7. Supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to: Supercharger Belt Tensioner .
    8. Supercharger belt idler pulleys. Refer to: Supercharger Belt Idler Pulley .
    9. Accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
    10. Accessory drive belt idler pulley. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
    11. Crankshaft front seal. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    • Remove the nut and ground wire.

  6. Secure the coolant hoses aside.

  7. Remove the fasteners and position the generator aside.

  8. Remove the nut and the wiring harness retainer.

  9. Remove the bolts and stud bolt.

  10. NOTE: The fasteners differ in size, not the location of each fastener during removal.

    Remove the bolts and stud bolts.

    • Rock the top of the engine front cover forward to release the cover from the 2 dowels.

    • Lift the engine front cover off of the engine.

    • Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage.

  11. Remove and discard the engine front cover gaskets.

  12. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
    NOTE: Care must be taken to not damage the oil pan gasket.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper
