Pinpoint Test BQ: The Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime Is Inoperative

  1. Refer to STARTING SYSTEM Wiring Diagrams for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime. REFER to: Warning Chimes - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    BCM B10F1:14 Key In Switch: Circuit Short To Ground Or Open A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the BCM if an open is detected on the key-in-ignition switch input with the ignition ON.

    Possible Sources 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Interior lighting concern
    • Key-in-ignition switch (part of the ignition switch)
    • BCM
    • GWM
    • IPC

  2. BQ1 CHECK THE SEATBELT WARNING CHIME OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Monitor the seatbelt warning chime when the ignition switch is transitioned from OFF to RUN for 6 seconds.

    Does the seatbelt warning chime operate for approximately 6 seconds? 

    Yes  GO to  BQ2
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test A 
  3. BQ2 CHECK THE INTERIOR LAMPS OPERATION

    • Open and close the driver door.

    • Observe the interior lamps.

    Do the interior lamps operate correctly from the driver door? 

    Yes  GO to  BQ3
    No  REFER to: Interior Lighting .
  4. BQ3 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Controller Area Network (CAN) Module Communications Network .
    No  GO to  BQ4
  5. BQ4 PERFORM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Is DTC B10F1:14 present? 

    Yes  GO to  BQ5
    No  GO to  BQ8
  6. BQ5 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Insert the key into the ignition cylinder.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  BQ8
    No  GO to  BQ6
  7. BQ6 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Remove the key from the ignition cylinder.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  BQ7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. BQ7 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR OPEN

    • Disconnect Ignition Switch C250 .

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  DIAGNOSE the ignition switch. REFER to: Steering Wheel and Column Electrical Components .
  9. BQ8 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the BCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
