Valve Cover LH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Installation of new spark plug seals or VCT seals is only required if seals are damaged.
  1. Release the fuel pressure. Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect - Vehicles With: Single Battery . REFER to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: DUAL BATTERIES .
    • Remove the oil level indicator.

    • Disconnect the crankcase pressure sensor electrical connector.

    • Disconnect the quick release couplings and remove the PCV tube.

  3. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump. Refer to: High-Pressure Fuel Pump .
  4. Remove the LH ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG .
  5. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the LH turbocharger and detach the hose retainer.

    • Loosen the clamp and disconnect the vacuum hose from the intake manifold and detach the hose retainer from the stud bolt.

      Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Remove the stud bolt and position the EVAP purge solenoid and hoses aside.

  6. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the pin-type retainer.

  7. Remove the nuts and position the cabin heater coolant pump aside.

    • Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.

  8. Remove and discard the fasteners and position the fuel tube bracket aside.

  9. NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.
    NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.

    Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

  10. Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.

  11. NOTE: Inspect the VCT oil control solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the VCT oil control solenoid seals.

    Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone, 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  12. NOTE: Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the spark plug tube seals.

    Use Special Service Tool: 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer, 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  13. Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
