Oil Pan: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect - Vehicles With: Single Battery . Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect - Vehicles With: Dual Batteries .
  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    2. Refer to: Starter Motor .

  5. Remove the retainers and the shield.

  6. Remove and discard the retainers and remove the lower load path bars.

    Vehicles equipped with dual generators 

  7. Remove the A/C compressor.
  8. Remove the accessory drive bracket stud and bolt.

  9. Remove the bolts and the accessory drive bracket.

  10. Remove the bolt, detach the wire harness and position aside.

    Vehicles equipped with single generator 

  11. Remove the wiring harness nut.

  12. Detach the retainer and disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.

  13. Remove the bolt, detach the wire harness and position aside.

  16. NOTE: The oil pan bolt can not be fully removed from the bellhousing when equipped with a front axle assemble. Access to the bolt is limited.

    Remove the oil pan bolt from the oil pan.

  17. Remove the oil pan bolts.

  18. Remove the coolant line pin-type retainer.

  20. Remove the oil pan bolt.

  21. Loosen the bellhousing bolt 5 mm (0.19 in).

    Remove and discard the RH and LH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil.

      Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

      Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

    • Remove and discard the oil filter.

  27. Remove the retainer and position the oil cooler aside.

  28. Install the stands under the RH engine mount bracket and under the engine block generator mount boss. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    Remove and discard the RH and LH engine mount bolts from the bottom of the engine crossmember.

  30. Detach the ground wire retainers and position aside.

  31. With the aid of an assistant, remove and discard the engine crossmember bolts and remove the engine crossmember.

  32. Separate the engine and transmission 5 mm (0.19 in).

  33. Remove the oil pan bolts.

    Using a pry tool on the pry pads, remove the oil pan.

    • Thoroughly wash the oil pan to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.

  35. Make sure that the mating faces of the engine block are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .

  36. Make sure that the mating faces of the engine front cover are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
