Pinpoint Test Z: The Low Washer Fluid Level RTT (RECONFIGURABLE Telltale) Indicator Is Never Or Always On

  1. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

See Low Washer Fluid Level RTT Indicator. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Low washer fluid level sensor
    • IPC

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks

    • Verify the washer fluid reservoir is full and the ignition has been cycled at least once prior to beginning the pinpoint test for an always on condition or the washer fluid is or has been reported low for a never on condition.

  2. Z1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Close all doors and hood.

    • Monitor the door ajar RTT warning indicator.

    • Open the driver door.

    • Monitor the door ajar RTT warning indicator.

Is the door ajar RTT warning indicator off with the door closed, and on with the door open?

Yes  If the low washer fluid level RTT indicator is inoperative, GO to  Z2 If the low washer fluid level RTT indicator is always on, GO to  Z5
No  GO to Pinpoint Test A
  3. Z2 CHECK THE LOW WASHER FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Windshield Washer Fluid Level Sensor C138.

    • Connect a fused jumper wire:

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Observe the low washer fluid level RTT indicator.

Is the low washer fluid level RTT indicator on?

Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL a new windshield washer fluid level sensor. REFER to: Windshield Washer Fluid Level Sensor .
No  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  Z3
  4. Z3 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID LEVEL SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN AT THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID LEVEL SENSOR

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C138-2
      GFD609699Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

    Yes  GO to  Z4
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. Z4 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID LEVEL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect IPC C220A.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C220A-11
      GFD609699Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY

      Ground

Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?

    Yes  GO to  Z7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. Z7 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the IPC connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the IPC connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
