Pinpoint Test D: Excessive Vibration Or Noise From Clutch System

  1. Possible Sources 

    • Accessory drive belt
    • Clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft not correctly lubricated
    • Clutch disc
    • Clutch pressure plate
    • Clutch release bearing
    • Crankshaft end play
    • Engine component grounding against frame
    • Flywheel
    • Flywheel bolts loose
    • Imbalanced clutch pressure plate
    • Loose or damaged engine or transmission mounts
    • Loose or damaged flywheel
    • Oil on clutch disc facing
    • Worn clutch disc
    • Worn pressure plate
    • Worn pressure plate springs

  2. D1 STATIC CLUTCH PEDAL CHECK

    • Depress and release the clutch pedal.

    Is the noise apparent when the clutch is operated? 

    Yes  LUBRICATE the clutch and brake pedal shaft. TEST the system for normal operation. NOTE: Only use Ford specified lube. 
    No  GO to  D3
  3. D2 DYNAMIC CLUTCH PEDAL CHECK

    • Start the engine.

    • Depress and hold the clutch pedal for 3 to 4 seconds.

    Is the noise apparent when the clutch is depressed? 

    Yes  VERIFY the customer concern. REFER to: Engine .
    No  GO to  D3
  4. D3 CHECK THE ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION MOUNTS

    • Inspect all the engine and transmission mounts for looseness or damage.

    Are any of the engine or transmission mounts loose or damaged? 

    Yes  TIGHTEN or INSTALL new engine or transmission mounts. TEST the system for normal operation.
    No  GO to  D4
  5. D4 INSPECT THE PRESSURE PLATE BOLTS

    • Inspect the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts.

    Are any of the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts loose? 

    Yes  TIGHTEN or INSTALL new bolts. REFER to: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate .
    No  GO to  D5
  6. D5 INSPECT THE PRESSURE PLATE

    • Remove the clutch pressure plate.

    • Inspect the clutch pressure plate for wear or damage.

    Are any signs of damage present on the clutch pressure plate? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new clutch pressure plate. REFER to: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate  . TEST the system for normal operation.
    No  GO to  D6
  7. D6 CHECK THE CLUTCH DISC

    • NOTE: If the internal damper of the clutch disc is damaged or contaminated with grease or oil, it will sound similar to a "transmission rattle".

    • Check the clutch disc for wear or damage (such as broken dampener/spring or damaged spline).

    Is the clutch disc OK? 

    Yes  GO to  D7
    No  INSTALL a new clutch disc. REFER to: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate  . TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. D7 INSPECT THE FLYWHEEL

    • Inspect the flywheel for wear or damage.

    Is the flywheel OK? 

    Yes  GO to  D8
    No  REPAIR or INSTALL a new flywheel as necessary. REFER to: Flywheel . TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. D8 INSPECT THE SLAVE CYLINDER

    • Inspect the slave cylinder for wear or damage.

    Is there any damage on the slave cylinder (such as broken or popped out spring). Is it difficult to rotate the bearing at static condition? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new clutch slave cylinder and release bearing assembly. REFER to: Clutch Slave Cylinder .
    No  GO to  D9
  10. D9 INSPECT THE INPUT SHAFT

    • Inspect the input shaft for signs of wear, damage or corrosion.

    Are any signs of wear damage, or corrosion present on the input shaft? 

    Yes  If wear or damage is found, INSTALL a new input shaft. REFER to: Transmission - 2.3L EcoBoost (199kW/270PS) . If corrosion is found on the splines of the input shaft, apply a small amount of grease to the splines of the input shaft.
    No  VERIFY the customer concern. REFER to: Manual Transmission .
