Gear Shift Position Sensor: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. NOTE: If the gear position sensor and magnet assembly are being replaced, a new gear position sensor and magnet assembly must be installed as a matched pair with the same serial number on both.

    Visually check the gear position sensor and gear position sensor magnet to assure that they have the same serial number.

  2. NOTE: If the gear position sensor and magnet assembly are being replaced, a new gear position sensor and magnet assembly must be installed as a matched pair with the same serial number on both.

    Install the new shift shaft and gear position sensor magnet assembly.

  3. Install the gearshift lever pivot bolt.

    Torque: 16 lb.ft (22 Nm)

  4. Position the shift dampener lever inward into the shift shaft driver.

  6. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs, or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

    Clean the mating surfaces of the front and rear transmission cases and the midplate. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation

  7. Heat up the output shaft inner bearing race.

    Temperature

    : 247.8 deg.F (120 deg.C)

  8. NOTE: The rear case bolts have to be installed within 15 minutes of applying gasket maker.
    NOTE: Gasket maker should be a 3 mm bead with no breaks in the bead or a leak will be the result.

    Apply a 3 mm consistent bead of gasket maker on the transmission case mounting surface.

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  9. Install the transmission mid plate.

  10. Install the shift selector and the new select gate pin.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  14. NOTE: Use care to not scratch the output shaft surfaces or leaks and/or premature part failures such as bearings may be the result.
    NOTE: Install a new circlip as necessary.

    Install the crawler/reverse gear synchronizer circlip.

    1. Install the special tool on the output shaft and tighten. Use Special Service Tool: 308-809 Installer, Syncro Gear Pack.

      Torque: 155 lb.ft (210 Nm)

    2. Install the rear transmission case.

  24. Using a punch and soft face hammer, install the transmission case alignment dowel pins. Use the General Equipment: Punch

  25. Install the rear transmission case bolts in the order shown.

    Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  28. Install the output shaft seal. Refer to: Output Shaft Seal 
  29. Install the transmission. Refer to: Transmission - 2.3L EcoBoost (199kW/270PS) 
  30. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Level Check
