Pinpoint Test AQ : The PRNDL Not In Park Message Is Always Displayed

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Shift To Park Message Display. REFER to: Message Center - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources 

    • Communication concern
    • BCM
    • IPC

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Visually inspect the transmission range selector and make sure that the selector lever fully locks in the PARK (P) position and that there is not any binding of the transmission range selector.

  2. AQ1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Close all doors and the hood.

    • Clear all message center warnings by pressing the OK button for each warning present.

    • NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the message center to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning is active.

      Monitor the door ajar message center warning.

    • Open the driver door.

    • Clear the message center popup warning.

    • Monitor the door ajar message center warning.

    Does the driver door ajar message center warning turn off with the driver door closed and turn on with the driver door open? 

    Yes  GO to  AQ2
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test A 

  3. AQ2 CHECK THE PRNDL PARK (P) OPERATION

    • Apply the parking brake.

    • Move the floor shifter from PARK (P) to REVERSE while observing the PRNDL operation. Shift the vehicle in and out of PARK (P) while monitoring the PRNDL P indication.

    Does the PRNDL display P with the shifter in PARK (P) and turn off when the shifter is out of PARK (P)? 

    Yes  GO to  AQ3
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test AJ 

  4. AQ3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any DTC recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC .
    No  GO to  AQ4

  5. AQ4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Are any BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  GO to  AQ5

  6. AQ5 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) . TEST the system for normal operation. If the shift to park display remains on, Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
