Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Unit: Installation

  1. NOTE: If installing a new component, determine the part number.

    Install the VCT units.

    1. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1606 Locking Tool, Variable Camshaft Timing.
    2. Align the installation marks.
    3. NOTE: Ensure that the installation marks are aligned and orientated to a 12 o'clock position.

  2. NOTE: Only tighten the bolts finger tight at this stage.

    Install the bolts finger tight.

    Install the timing belt.

  5. WARNING: The tensioner is under spring tension. Be careful when handling the tensioner. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

    Remove the locking pin.

  6. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .

  8. Install a new gasket.

  9. NOTE: The component must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

    Apply beads of silicone sealant that are 4 mm (0.157 in) and 6 mm (0.236 in) as shown in the graphic.

    Material Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  10. NOTE: The component must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

    Apply beads of silicone sealant that are 4 mm (0.157 in) on the edge of the engine oil pan.

  11. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.
    NOTE: Note the different lengths of the bolts.

    1. Torque

      1-2, M6x60: 44 lb.in (5 Nm) 3-6, M10x95: 89 lb.in (10 Nm) 7-16, M6x60: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    2. Torque

      3-6: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) 3-4: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm) 5-6: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm) 1-2: 80 lb.in (9 Nm) 7-16: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    3. Torque

      3-4: 90 deg. 5-6: 90 deg. 1-2: 90 deg. 7-16: 90 deg. 17-19, M6x20: 89 lb.in (10 Nm) 20, M6x75: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    4. Torque

      17-19: 89 lb.in (10 Nm) 20: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  12. Tighten the engine mount studs.

    Torque 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Install the engine mount and the nuts.

      Torque 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

    2. NOTE: Only tighten the bolts finger tight at this stage.

      Install the engine mount bolts finger-tight.

  14. Tighten the engine mount bolts.

    1. Turn until resistance is felt.

  16. NOTE: Use an open-ended wrench to hold the camshafts by the hexagon to prevent the camshafts from turning.

    Tighten the bolts.

    Torque 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    Tighten the bolts.

    Torque Stage 1: 37 lb.ft (50 Nm) Stage 2: 70 lb.ft (95 Nm) Stage 3: 45 deg.

  19. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.
    NOTE: Only tighten the bolts finger tight at this stage.

    1. Install a new oil supply tube and sealing washers.
    2. Install the bolts finger tight.
    3. Install a new banjo bolt finger tight.

    1. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
    2. Attach the wiring harness retainer.

    1. Remove the support and install the A/C compressor and the bolts.

      Torque 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    2. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
    3. Attach the wiring harness retainer.

  26. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Wipe clean the mating surfaces.

      Install the throttle body/bracket assembly.

    2. NOTE: Only tighten the bolts finger tight at this stage.

      Install the fasteners finger tight.

  27. Tighten the fasteners and the clamp.

  29. NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.

    1. Install the CAC inlet pipe and the bolt.

      Torque 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the clamps.

      Torque 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    1. Install the CAC outlet pipe and the bolt.

      Torque 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the clamps.

      Torque 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    3. Connect the fuel evaporative tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  30. Install the degas bottle onto the tabs.

  31. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Generator - 1.0L EcoBoost (92kW/125PS) .
    2. Refer to: Catalytic Converter .
    3. Refer to: Valve Cover .

  32. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Remove the drain plug, drain engine oil and install drain plug. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Torque 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

  34. NOTE: Lubricate the engine oil filter seal with clean engine oil.

    Install a new engine oil filter.

    Torque 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

  35. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

  36. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  37. Use the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Misfire Monitor Profile Correction routine in the diagnostic scan tool.
