Symptom Chart(s)
Symptom Chart: Automatic Transmission
Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .
In most circumstances the PCM sets a DTC to help guide with diagnostics. Refer to the DTC Chart before using the Symptom Chart.

|
| Delayed Soft/Forward | Forward clutch damaged or worn. REFER to: Forward Clutch Assembly . | |
| No Forward and No Reverse | Check the transmission fluid level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check . PERFORM Transmission Line Pressure Test. REFER to: Transmission Line Pressure Test . Inspect the filter and pump assembly. REFER to: Pump Assembly . |
|
| Delayed/Soft Forward and Reverse | Check the transmission fluid level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check . PERFORM Transmission Line Pressure Test. REFER to: Transmission Line Pressure Test . Inspect the filter and pump assembly. REFER to: Pump Assembly . |
|
| Neutral after Launch | Low one-way clutch assembly damaged. REFER to: Low One-Way Clutch Assembly . | |
| Harsh Stop/Start event | Verify Fluid level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check . If fluid level is ok, Clear any DTC, then carry out prime procedure: Verify TFT is greater than 100 deg.F, prime the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Pump. Using a diagnostic scan tool, Key ON, Engine OFF, command TRANS_PMP_CMD to 80% for 30 seconds. Carry out a road test until there is a stop/start event. If the restart is harsh, repeat the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Pump prime procedure. Continue road test and evaluate each stop/start event. Repeat prime procedure until three consecutive normal stop/start events are achieved. Clear DTCs. | |
| Shift Concerns | No 1-2 Shift/Harsh/Soft/Slipping | Intermediate clutch damaged or worn. REFER to: Intermediate Clutch Assembly
. Forward clutch assembly damaged or worn. REFER to: Forward Clutch Assembly . Low one-way clutch assembly damaged. REFER to: Low One-Way Clutch Assembly . |
| No 2-3 Shift/Harsh/Soft/Slipping | Direct clutch damaged or worn. REFER to: Direct Clutch Assembly . Forward clutch assembly damaged or worn. REFER to: Forward Clutch Assembly . Intermediate clutch damaged or worn. REFER to: Intermediate Clutch Assembly . |
|
| 2-3 Shift Hesitation After A Cold Soak | Verify Fluid level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check . If fluid level is okay, these hesitation events should be deemed a normal characteristic and do not cause any abnormal wear or durability concern. The hydraulic circuit can partially drain back during an extended engine off condition and could take a couple applications (2-3 shifts) to work any air out of the hydraulic circuit. No further work on the transmission should take place for that condition. | |
