Pinpoint Test A : Shift Solenoid A (SSA)

  1. Refer to OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The PCM applies and releases the various clutches in the transmission by actuating the shift solenoids in the solenoid body. SSA is a Variable Force solenoid (VFS).

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P0750:00 Shift Solenoid "A": No Sub Type Information Open circuit in the solenoid or wire harness.
    PCM P0753:00 Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical: No Sub Type Information Open circuit in the solenoid or wire harness.
    PCM P0754:00 Shift Solenoid "A" Intermittent: No Sub Type Information Intermittent circuit in the solenoid or wire harness open, shorted to ground or shorted to power.
    PCM P0973:00 Shift Solenoid "A" Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information Short to ground in the solenoid or wire harness.
    PCM P0974:00 Shift Solenoid "A" Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information Open circuit or short to power in the solenoid or wire harness.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
    • SSA
    • Transmission internal wiring harness frame
    • PCM

  2. A1 RETRIEVE AND RECORD ALL DTCS

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all DTCs.

    Are DTCs P0750, P0753, P0754, P0973 and/or P0974 present? 

    Yes  For DTCs P0750, P0753 and/or P0754, GO to  A2 For DTC P0973, GO to  A5 For DTC P0974, GO to  A7
    No  REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom .

  3. A2 CHECK THE SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C1520A.

    • Disconnect PCM C1232E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  A3
    No  REPAIR the circuit.

  4. A3 CHECK THE SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Component side resistance pin 8

      		 Component side resistance pin 5

    Is the resistance between 4.2 and 7.2 ohms? 

    Yes  Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    No  GO to  A4

  5. A4 CHECK SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) RESISTANCE

    • Remove the transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame . Inspect for metal shavings on the exposed metal contacts or other components and clean the solenoid and transmission internal wiring harness frame terminals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      SSA pin A.

    Is the resistance between 4.2 and 7.2 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame .
    No  INSTALL a new SSA. REFER to: Solenoid .

  6. A5 CHECK THE SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C1520A.

    • Disconnect PCM C1232E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      		 Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  A6
    No  REPAIR the circuit.

  7. A6 CHECK SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Remove the transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame . Inspect for metal shavings on the exposed metal contacts or other components and clean the solenoid and transmission internal wiring harness frame terminals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      SSA pin A.

      		 Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new SSA. REFER to: Solenoid .
    No  INSTALL a new transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame .

  8. A7 CHECK THE SHIFT SOLENOID A (SSA) CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C1520A.

    • Disconnect PCM C1232E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1520A-8

      		 Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
