Exhaust Tailpipe Actuator: Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.
  3. Before installation, inspect the exhaust tailpipe actuator to make sure the spring is properly installed on the actuator.

  4. NOTE: LH side shown, RH similar.
    NOTE: The valve wheel is shown in the fully open position.

    The valve wheel can be repositioned to ease alignment between the exhaust tailpipe actuator spring and the valve wheel slots.

  5. NOTE: The exhaust muffler actuator spring will self-align in the valve wheel slots on first key-on cycle.

  6. NOTE: Install the three actuator nuts finger tight.

    Press the actuator down and loosely install the nuts.

  7. After installation of the actuator, activate the drive modes via steering wheel or center console mounted exhaust switch on certain models and visually inspect the operation of the valves inside of the exhaust tips.

    1. In normal/weather drive mode (or quiet exhaust mode) both valves should be fully closed.
    2. In sport/track/dragstrip drive mode (or sports exhaust mode) both valves should be fully open.
    3. During the transition between modes, an audible difference in exhaust tone should be heard. Refer to: Electronic Engine Controls - Component Location .

  8. NOTE: Evenly tighten the nuts in the sequence shown.

    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

  9. Install the muffler and tailpipe. Refer to: Muffler and Tailpipe .
  10. Check the exhaust system for leaks.
