Pinpoint Test A : Selected Gear Sensor Circuit Faults
- NOTE: The selected gear sensor is also know as the rev matching / neutral position / gear shift position sensor.
Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 2.3L or Electronic Engine Controls - 5.0L for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The selected gear sensor provides two pulse-width modulated signals (Neutral Position Sensor "A" and Neutral Position Sensor "B") for the gear shifter "shift" position (Y axis) and one PWM signal (Gear Shift Position Sensor C) for the gear shifter "select" position (X axis), the PCM processes these three signals to derive the position of the gear shifter which is then used to support the rev matching function. The rev matching function allows the PCM to target an engine speed to match the resultant input speed of the transmission based on the gear shifter position. The rev matching function is provided to lessen the engine braking force the driver and passengers feel on a downshift. The rev matching function can be turned on and off using the information display menu.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P086A:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information This is due to an internal fault of the selected gear sensor causing neutral position sensor "A" and neutral position sensor "B" to provide a duty cycle outside of the NEUTRAL position range while the engine speed, vehicle speed, or clutch pedal released information indicate the vehicle is NOT moving with the engine running and with the clutch pedal. PCM P086B:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "A" frequency output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (less than 225 Hz or greater than 275 Hz) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P086C:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "A" duty cycle output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (low, less than 7%) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P086D:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "A" duty cycle output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (high, greater than 93%) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P086E:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the selected gear sensor indicates the transmission is in NEUTRAL when other inputs indicate the transmission is in gear, engine over vehicle speed matches a known transmission ratio. This is most likely due to an internal sensor fault. PCM P08AE:00 Neutral Position Sensor "B" Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "B" frequency output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (less than 225 Hz, or greater than 275 Hz) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P08AF:00 Neutral Position Sensor "B" Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "B" duty cycle output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (low, less than 7%) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P08B0:00 Neutral Position Sensor "B" Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw neutral position sensor "B" duty cycle output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (high, greater than 73%) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P08B2:00 Neutral Position Sensor "A"/"B" Correlation: No Sub Type Information The PCM takes the raw neutral position sensor "A" duty cycle, and the raw neutral position sensor "B" duty cycle, adjust both to the same scale and compares the 2 adjusted duty cycles. If the adjusted duty cycles differ by more than 5%, this DTC is set. PCM P095A:00 Gear Shift Position Circuit "C": No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the raw gear shift position sensor "C" frequency output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (less than 225 Hz or greater than 275 Hz) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P095B:00 Gear Shift Position Circuit "C" Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the gear shifter position signal derived from the 3 PWM signals from the selected gear sensor do NOT match the non-zero estimated gear based on engine to vehicle speed ratio. This is likely due to an internal sensor fault. If DTC P095B is currently set in the current or previous operating cycle, REV Matching will NOT be allowed until the selected gear sensor is functional, or if DTC P095B is cleared by the diagnostic scan tool. Each estimated gear has a fault filter, if one of more of the estimated gears does not match the gear shifter position, those specific estimated gears fault filters would need to recover before DTC P095B passes a self-test. PCM P095C:00 Gear Shift Position Circuit "C" Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the raw gear shift position sensor "C" duty cycle output from the selected gear sensor is out of range (low, less than 10%) for the pulse-width modulated signal. This is likely due to a circuit fault (open, short to ground, short to power) or an internal sensor fault. PCM P095D:00 Gear Shift Position Circuit "C" High: No Sub Type Information Gear Shift Position Sensor C, inside the selected gear sensor, produces a pulse-width modulated signal, 225 to 275 Hz. This DTC sets in the PCM when the signal frequency is above the higher range, greater than 275 Hz. This is likely due to a circuit short directly to ground or an internal sensor fault. Visual Inspection and Pre-checks

- Visually inspect the selected gear sensor and connector for obvious signs of damage.
Were any conditions found during inspection?
Yes REPAIR as necessary. No GO to A2 - A2 CHECK THE SELECTED GEAR SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT
- Disconnect SELECTED GEAR SENSOR C1854.
- Ignition ON.
Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?
Yes GO to A3 No If the voltage is less than 4.8 volts, REPAIR the circuit for an open or high resistance. If the voltage is greater than 5.2 volts, REPAIR the circuit for a short to voltage. - A3 CHECK THE SELECTED GEAR SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?
Yes GO to A4 No If the voltage is less than 4.8 volts, REPAIR the circuit for an open or high resistance. If the voltage is greater than 5.2 volts, REPAIR the circuit for a short to voltage. - A4 CHECK THE GEAR POSITION CIRCUITS FOR SHORTS TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect PCM C175T and PCM C175B.
- Measure:

Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit. No GO to A5 - A5 CHECK THE GEAR POSITION CIRCUITS FOR SHORTS TO GROUND

Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to A6 No REPAIR the circuit. - A6 CHECK THE GEAR POSITION CIRCUITS FOR OPENS
- Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A7 No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- A7 CHECK THE SELECTED GEAR SENSOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Install a new shift shaft. REFER to the appropriate Service Information.
- Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Repeat the PCM self-test.
Is the DTC still present?
Yes GO to A8 No The system has been repaired and is operating correctly at this time. - A8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect the PCM connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing . No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
