Pinpoint Test A : Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TFT sensor is located on the side of the manual transmission. The resistance value of the TFT sensor varies with temperature change. The PCM monitors the voltage drop across the TFT sensor to determine the temperature of the transmission fluid.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P0711:00 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the TFT sensor is stuck. It is reading within range, but the PCM detected no change when the vehicle was driven enough that the transmission fluid temperature should have changed. PCM P0712:00 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open or a short to ground in the TFT sensor circuit. PCM P0713:00 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open circuit in the TFT sensor circuit. Possible Sources
- Low transmission fluid level
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
- TFT sensor
- PCM
- A1 RETRIEVE AND RECORD ALL DTCS
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the PCM self-test.
Are any TFT sensor circuit diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?
Yes GO to A2 No CHECK the transmission fluid level. ADJUST the transmission fluid level as necessary. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check . If the transmission fluid level is OK, REFER to Symptom Chart . - A2 CHECK THE TFT (TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE) SENSOR SIGNAL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TFT sensor C1468.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1468-1 Ground
Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.1 volts?
Yes GO to A5 No GO to A3 - A3 CHECK THE TFT (TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE) SENSOR SIGNAL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM C1381E.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A4 No REPAIR the circuit. - A4 CHECK THE TFT (TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE) SENSOR SIGNAL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1468-1 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing . No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- A5 CHECK THE TFT (TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE) SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM C1381B.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A6 No REPAIR the circuit. - A6 CHECK THE TFT (TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE) SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1468-2 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new TFT sensor. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor . No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
