Engine Front Cover: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Degas Bottle .
    2. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    3. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    4. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .
    5. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
    6. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .

  5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing assembly.

  6. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.

    • Release the clamp and remove the upper radiator hose T-connector/thermostat housing assembly.

    • Release the clamp and remove the degas bottle coolant hose.

  7. Remove and discard the thermostat housing O-ring seal.

  8. Disconnect the heater hose.

  9. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump pulley.

  10. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump.

  11. Remove and discard the coolant pump O-ring seal.

    • Disconnect the throttle body and the EVAP purge valve electrical connectors.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainer.

    • Remove the nut and ground wire.

  12. Detach the wiring harness retainers from the engine front cover and stud bolt.

  13. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.

  14. Remove the fasteners and position the generator aside.

  15. Remove the nut and the wiring harness retainer.

  18. NOTE: Oil filter adapter and timing drive components removed from view for clarity.

    • Rock the top of the engine front cover forward to release the cover from the 2 dowels.

    • Lift the engine front cover off of the engine.

    • Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage.

  19. Remove and discard the engine front cover gaskets.

  20. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
