Transmission - 3.5L Duratec (212kW/278PS): Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Battery Tray .
    2. Refer to: Upper Intake Manifold .
    3. Refer to: Cowl Panel .
    4. Refer to: Starter Motor .

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers from the transmission.

  4. Remove the top torque converter housing bolts.

  5. Install the special tool on the RH cylinder head. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1529 Lift Eye, Engine.

  6. Install the special tool on the LH cylinder head. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1245 Engine Lift Eye.

  7. Remove the retainers and the RH and LH cowl filler panels.

  8. Remove the retainers and the upper air deflector.

  9. Using the special tools, support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine., 303-1454 Engine Spreader Bar., 303-1529 Lift Eye, Engine., 303-1245 Engine Lift Eye.

    1. Remove the transmission support insulator bracket bolt.
    2. Remove and discard the bolts and remove the transmission support insulator bracket.

  10. Remove and discard the rear roll restrictor bolt.

  11. Remove and discard the bolts, lower the transmission and remove the transmission support insulator.

  12. Remove the subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .
  13. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.

    Torque

    : 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  14. Position aside and support the LH halfshaft.

  15. Remove and discard the circlip.

    FWD 

  17. Remove the halfshaft bearing bracket bolts. Position aside and support the RH halfshaft.

    AWD 

  18. Remove the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    All vehicles 

  19. Remove the fasteners and the torque converter inspection cover.

  21. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector, remove the wiring retainers and position aside the vehicle wiring harness.

  22. Remove the secondary latches from the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  23. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transmission fluid cooler. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).

  24. NOTE: Vehicles equipped with active warm up.

    Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube.

  25. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube.

    1. Remove and discard the bolt.
    2. Loosen the fitting and remove the transmission fluid cooler tube.

  26. Remove the nuts and position aside the transmission fluid warmer.

  27. Using the transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  28. Remove the remaining torque converter housing bolts.

    1. If equipped.

  29. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool and remove the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  30. Remove the nut and the manual control lever.

  31. NOTE: It is only necessary to remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transmission if the transmission is being overhauled or replaced. If the transmission is being removed for access to other components only, it is not necessary to remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

    Remove the nuts and the bolts, pull the transmission fluid cooler thermal bypass valve and the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes straight up and remove the assembly from the transmission.

  32. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

  33. If the transmission is being removed to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
