Oil Pan: Installation

2WD/4WD 

  1. NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 10 minutes of sealant application, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 10 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

    Apply a 3 mm bead of silicone sealant.

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  2. Install the oil pan and the bolts finger-tight.

  3. NOTE: The engine front cover-to-oil pan fasteners must be tightened first to align the front surface of the oil pan flush with the front surface of the engine block.

    Install the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  4. Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  5. Alternate tightening the LH bellhousing-to-engine and RH engine-to-bellhousing lower bolts to draw the transaxle and engine together.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  6. Tighten the engine-to-transmission bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  7. Install the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  8. Install the oil pan bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    4WD 

  10. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    2WD/4WD 

  11. Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil and install.

    Material: Engine Oil - SAE 5W-30 - Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W30-Q1SP (WSS-M2C946-B1)

    Torque: Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm) Stage 2: 180 deg.

    1. Position the A/C compressor and install the stud.

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

    2. Install the A/C compressor bolts and nut.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    • Connect the electrical connectors and wiring retainer.

  12. Install the new engine roll restrictor bolt.

    Torque: 111 lb.ft (150 Nm)

    1. Install the catalytic converter support bracket bolts.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    2. Tighten the catalytic converter support bracket bolt.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    1. Install the CAC inlet tube and the nuts.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the clamp.

      Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  13. Tighten the CAC inlet tube clamp.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  14. Install the A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
  15. Connect the CAC hose, electrical connector and the wire retainers. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  16. Install the underbody shield and the retainers.

  18. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  19. Attach the wiring harness retainer to the transmission-to-engine stud bolt.

  20. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    2. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .

  21. Install the oil indicator.

    1. NOTE: Lubricating the grommets with silicone grease will aid in the installation of the engine appearance cover, and any future removal and installation of the cover.

      Lubricate each grommet with silicone grease.

      Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound / XG-3-A (ESE-M1C171-A)

    2. Position the engine appearance cover onto engine with the grommets aligned with the studs.
    3. Press down on the engine appearance cover at each grommet location to attach the grommets onto the studs.

  22. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

    Material: Engine Oil - SAE 5W-30 - Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W30-Q1SP (WSS-M2C946-B1)
